Best recorded albums of all time?

Please keep in mind that it isn't just the recording, but the mastering, particularly in the case of recordings from the '50s through the '70s which have been remastered (on both analog and digital formats) over and over again. In particular, many recent remasters have been less about extracting...

Another "which entry-level headphone should I buy?" thread.

I'm not familiar with "Mad Dogs." I assume that's a nickname?

Another "which entry-level headphone should I buy?" thread.

After getting by with various earbuds and ultra-cheap phones for some time, I'm looking to get a decent pair to use at home with my computer (eventually to be fitted with a DAC/headphone amp) and iPhone. The main factors I'm concerned with are: -- No more than $300, and preferably less than...

The Audiophile Network, BBSes, and The Good Old Days

Yes. J10 (as he was known on TAN) started off at TAS, then moved over to Stereophile after about a year (when TAS got in some financial trouble). I seem to recall he lasted at Stereophile for a number of years; I really don't remember when he left.

Quote: I think JGH must have been around before I joined, as I don't remember him posting at all.

The Audiophile Network, BBSes, and The Good Old Days

It looks like I found this thread relatively late...when we first were talking about making this a separate thread, it was when another thread went off-topic with reminiscences about The Audiophile Network (TAN), for which Steve Eddy was technical adviser. I don't know if anyone else here was a...

How the Mighty TAS (The Absolute Sound) Would've Fallen Without a Bunch of wide-eyed TEENAGERS - Interest in this story????

Sorry to hear about your wife's illness. I have the information from that issue; just ask me when you're ready to proceed.

How the Mighty TAS (The Absolute Sound) Would've Fallen Without a Bunch of wide-eyed TEENAGERS - Interest in this story????

As I keep trying to tell Mike, I have that issue right here on the desk, have provided him some of the info from there on this very thread, and am ready to provide anything else he needs. I can't understand why I keep pointing that out, and he keeps ignoring me while asking if anyone else has...

Questions about older Headroom products and Crossfeed...

Yes, I tried a couple yesterday, and they certainly seemed to make a difference, at least with cheap earbuds. I wish the iPhone had a workable crossfeed app, but the only such player they have (Rondo), although adding a sense of space, takes centered vocals and shifts them slightly...

How the Mighty TAS (The Absolute Sound) Would've Fallen Without a Bunch of wide-eyed TEENAGERS - Interest in this story????

Mike, if you look back at post #59, you'll see I included some of that information, and was quite ready to provide you with answers to any further questions you had. ,

How the Mighty TAS (The Absolute Sound) Would've Fallen Without a Bunch of wide-eyed TEENAGERS - Interest in this story????

I'm new enough to this site that I didn't even know you could do a "PM chain."

Are you saying that, without any processing, would give you a three-dimensional soundstage?

Questions about older Headroom products and Crossfeed...

While I've been an audiophile for many years, I never got much into headphone listening, except as a "last resort." The problem, for me, is that I favor classical music, where soundstaging is more important. The sound of an orchestra compressed into a thin, almost one-dimensional line between my...

How the Mighty TAS (The Absolute Sound) Would've Fallen Without a Bunch of wide-eyed TEENAGERS - Interest in this story????

You probably do -- James Walley, usually found there, when not discussing audio matters, teamed up with Lonnie Brownell in political debates versus Doug Blackburn and Yogi Saxena. Since I now seem to be traveling down Memory Lane, I'm recalling two technological "developments" of the time that...

How the Mighty TAS (The Absolute Sound) Would've Fallen Without a Bunch of wide-eyed TEENAGERS - Interest in this story????

Your mention of the W-2 sure brings back memories. At just about that time (maybe a couple of years earlier) the family-run computer-game developer I worked for ran into some pretty bad financial trouble when a couple of our major publishers decided they didn't feel like paying us for work...

How the Mighty TAS (The Absolute Sound) Would've Fallen Without a Bunch of wide-eyed TEENAGERS - Interest in this story????

Not exactly a GREEN alien, but an alien nonetheless -- volume 20, issue 107, july/August 1996, theme "Out Of This World Speakers." I'm pretty sure it's the right issue, since it mentions having just moved the offices back to Sea Cliff, complete with a picture of the house. Oh, and your name on...

    HDCD list

Quote:   It may have already been observed here, but it appears the entire The Golden Road set (collected albums 1967-73) is likewise "HDCD" only in the sense of having the flag set, but no PE, no TF, and minimum and maximum gain of 0.0 dB.

How the Mighty TAS (The Absolute Sound) Would've Fallen Without a Bunch of wide-eyed TEENAGERS - Interest in this story????

Mike --   For what it's worth, this "middle-aged pocket-protector audiophile" just joined this site because of this thread.   I've been out of touch with the audio press for awhile, so it was only yesterday that I found out HP had left TAS.  Can't say I was completely surprised, but it's...
