The noise cancelling appears to work well for me and there is noticeable.  I haven't been around terribly loud sounds (NYC subway or airplanes), but for walking around town, it is definitely working.

I can concur with this assessment of the H8, can't speak of the H7 (I have the H6).

You may be in bad shape, if it's like the H8s, I believe it's "Apple ecosystem" optimized.

I was able to get a microphone cable from B&O at no charge for my H8s by reaching out them; you may want to do the same.  I am tempted to get these as a replacement for the H8s due to their updated bluetooth chip.
