That's exactly my problem. If I had any other source I wouldn't have asked Head-fi. My only other "source" is my phone, which has a silly flat USB port that doesn't fit anything.

I've messaged Sennheiser about this issue. Them having experience with audio might know what may be causing this. The cracking issue has been fixed since July 2011. If you're unlucky enough to have one because the stock was from before then, you'll get it replaced under warranty if it starts cracking, without question.

Sorry to bump this up a bit, but I've got the same question as the OP. The only difference here is that I don't have any dedicated sound card. Period. I'm really looking to go sub 100 dollars (unless something that's very good bang for buck comes along) and I'm currently looking at the FiiO E10...

On the topic of making the HD598 sound even better, I'm currently powering it completely from stock (HD598 > Onboard sound card). Would I benefit more from the E10 or a dedicated sound card?

Unfortunately not. I've only got experience the with Senns and the ATH-M50 (returning those), and I don't want to unintentionally give out mis-informed advice.   The only thing I can say is that closed headphones do isolate better amongst other thing, at the cost of losing the open-aired...

Unfortunately, the M50's suffer from reccessed mids. Compared to the 595's, they felt flat with no depth and uninteresting in my opinion. It's the main reason I've returned them as it was quite noticable.
