A crack is barely within my budget, but would it be worth anything without a dac?

Expect much better highs and more clarity from the RE0 and deeper bass (not necessarily MORE bass, though). And expect better build quality and isolation from the shures.

i agree with the hd25, sounds very much like my ms1 but less sharp and open and with better bass

I can attest to the fact that the signatures of the two are pretty similar. I find the MS1i's have a much... sharper sound in that the music really kicks. I prefer them for this reason. That said, the HD25s are extremely portable, built like a tank, closed and isolate well and overall just well...

I'm fairly sure mine was the driver too. the right ear just up and stopped working abruptly. my shure's cable died, and i knew it was dying for weeks before with sound fading in and out depending on the cable orientation. 

Today my RE0's broke. The right earphone plays no sound at all, wobbling the cable around doesn't give any change and the entire unit is in like new condition as far as I can see. I've treated them pretty good, but a few times the earphones have clapped together when i temporarily take them out...
