The Reference 6J5 Thread (L63, 6C5, 12J5, 6P5, etc.)
Haven't heard the EF86 myself, but has pretty nice triode curves when strapped as pseudo-triode: Note that the electrical properties of EF86 are different than 6J5's - Only 1W max dissipation (vs the 2.5W of the 6J5), higher amplification factor, different transconductance and bias point, etc.- A2029

Really nice long exposure camera shots! Love the thermionic glow! Yup, you got it, output impedance should be somewhere in that range :) I'm a big fan of the 6N6P as drivers as well. They are usually dead silent on pretty well every amp especially when they have their sections paralleled in...- A2029

Main reduction in amp lifespan running 6x of the 6080/6AS7/5998 is from the heavy current running through the electrolytic capacitors in the heater supplies. High current causes the electrolyte within the caps to heat up and dry out over time. Even with the long-life capacitor upgrade those caps...- A2029

BH/BH+ can reach up to ~24V rms output from 1.2V rms input (using 6J5 driver tubes), so even standard 2V RCA input is plenty - A2029

Another interesting thing that can happen if you run some types of low gain, high wattage tubes (e.g. 6AS7) as driver into another power tube (6AS7 as output power tube) is distortion cancellation or additive effects. I.e. 6AS7's as drivers are already pretty high distortion tubes when compared...- A2029

Very cool setup! I like the look of the floating shelves with all your gear! I believe around 240mm to the top of transformers, but 250mm or so to top of tubes (6AS7s are slightly taller than the transformer covers). If you want to use tube socket adapters (e.g. to use EL34/KT88/etc. family as...- A2029

The BH/BH+ has good gain and can do around 107dB into the Tungsten headphones, so should work well overall (best if the low impedance capacitor option is added to get super low frequency extension in the bass) :) For even more dynamic headroom, I'm in the process of designing a slightly...- A2029

One interesting thing to note with the BH/BH+ is that the lighter that it is loaded, the lower the output distortion. So if just using the pre-outs and combining it with super low distortion tubes like the 5A/152M, the tube distortion should be super low for a tube amp; even as low as 0.005% or...- A2029

Agreed! So gorgeous outside and internally, and I'm sure it sounds awesome too! @leftside I've only dabbled a little bit into the digital realm and briefly looked at the datasheets for a few of the most common R2R DAC chips. In IDHT tubes: The heater heats up the cathode, and the cathode "boils off" electrons that fly across the interelectrode space from the cathode to anode. The cathode is specially coated with metals that help with boiling off the electrons. Sometimes this proprietary coating varies by...- A2029

When you look at the charts, the cursor is pointing to the peak of the frequency that is being tested/measured. In this case it was a 1000Hz test tone run at either 0.06V or 0.35V; voltages that correspond to medium listening volume and loud listening volumes into a pair of HD650 headphones. The...- A2029

Is it hum, or just the white noise/tube rush noise that all tubes have? All tubes, no matter what quality, will have some amount of white noise that kind of sounds like constant air/wind moving across a microphone. This "whooshing" is referred to as tube "rush" noise, and is louder for tubes...- A2029

The second stage of the amp where the amp is using the power tubes for the output, the BH+ mode, has an amplification factor (mu) of 1 or less for the power tubes as the power tubes are run in cathode follower configuration. The more power tubes that are run, the closer to a mu of 1 that second...- A2029

As @raindownthunda said, the amp is able to comfortably handle 2x 6080/6AS7/5998 per channel, and can do 1x 6336/6528 per channel with the optional 6336/6528 handling upgrade. When you get into 3x 6080/6AS7/5998 per channel, the amp gets into inferno heat territory and the lifespan of internal...- A2029

Running two EL34 tubes (1x per channel) runs the tubes at around 90-95% dissipation - still possible, but pretty hard on the tubes and relatively short tube life. Running 2x tubes per channel drops the dissipation per tube down to 50% or less dissipation per tube for long tube life :) That's...- A2029

Is that glue soft or hard? One thing that jumps to mind is that you could use heatshrink tubing with a high shrink ratio (e.g. 4 to 1, or better), and if you can find heatshrink with internal heat activated adhesive it may adhere to that if the glue is hard. If the glue is hard, you could sand...- A2029
