Sony has new headphones, MDR-1R
I'm not sure they even made any tweaks to the drivers between both models. Could be more to do with batch variance or differences in "burn in".- Sound Quest

Sony MDR-1A - Sony's latest update on the 1R
I've been given them more of a listen. Although I still find the higher mids a little grating at higher volume levels, I think my ears are becoming more accustomed to the overall sound signature. To be honest, I never really considered the midrange in the M50's to be all that recessed. I did...- Sound Quest

Sony MDR-1A - Sony's latest update on the 1R
They're certainly not counterfeit. The build quality and comfort live up to expectations. The Sub-Bass is there, but only if I turn the headphones up to a level where the saturation in the higher mids becomes unbearable. I can listen to the M50x louder without this problem, so perhaps that's why...- Sound Quest

Where do you get your music?
I can't suggest where. But if you look around carefully enough, you'll find certain places online where you can download SACD ISOs. I don't own an SACD player, so I use a piece of software which extracts the DSD tracks from the ISO, then I use another piece of software for converting the DSD...- Sound Quest

Sony MDR-1A - Sony's latest update on the 1R
Recently got a hold of a pair of these for what I thought was a bargain. Sad to say, i'm pretty underwhelmed by them. To my ears the sub bass is non-existent, the mid bass bump makes most music genres sound muddy and there's just no excitement in the treble. I'm powering them with an OPPO HA-2...- Sound Quest

Albums that only exist in analogue
Hi there. I'm trying to build up a catalogue of analogue. Albums that can only be obtained on LPs, tapes and other analogue mediums, but never released digitally. Most of these albums will of course be very old and probably quite rare to obtain. I've attempted an online search but can't find...- Sound Quest

Your "go to" reference albums
Just wondering what albums people like to turn to when testing out their headphones, dacs and amps... etc. Some of mines in no particular order: Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (SACD Stereo Remaster) Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (SACD Stereo Remaster) Pink Floyd - The Wall (MFSL/Mofi CD...- Sound Quest

Soundmagic HP150/HP151 Impressions Thread
Indeed, although I should point out that the Dac Magix XS amp I was using previously powered them almost as well and it's not really designed for high impedance headphones. Just to add to the confusion. I've also tested other headphones below 100ohms with the Oppo and I can't drive them to...- Sound Quest

Soundmagic HP150/HP151 Impressions Thread
Was considering the 150's, but decided to go with the 200's instead. Not disappointed. Surprising low end rumble for a open head can (although they're probably more semi-open than fully open, despite leaking out a great deal of sound). I would describe vocals as "relaxed". They have just enough...- Sound Quest

AKG k702's and "lack of bass".
I would argue that it's sharp piercing highs that are most damaging to the ears, rather than head shaking bass. Because people buy headphones expected them to rumble, they turn the volume up on their headphones looking for that rumble, this leads to hearing fatigue as a result of the sharp highs...- Sound Quest

[New] Philips Fidelio X1
The X1 doesn't really need the dragonfly, something like the Fiio17 would drive them with plenty of force to spare. It doesn't take much to get the best out of the X1's.- Sound Quest

[New] Philips Fidelio X1
Quote: I didn't think it was possible either. But after looking at a frequency graph and seeing an odd peek in the 1khz range (the highest peak on the graph), I reduced it on an equalizer and the sibilance greatly diminished.- Sound Quest

[New] Philips Fidelio X1
Quote: Thanks. It's the "Aureol Real" by "Teufel". It can sound pretty good, but need's a little EQing. I find there's a bit too much emphasis around the 1000hz region causing noticable sibilance on the vocals, but an equalizer can help smooth it out. It's not a bad open-back...- Sound Quest

Philips Fidelio X1 sound total crap?
Gents. We're bickering over a pair of headphones here, not a pair of (things worth debating about). The X1's are one of those headphones that you'll either love or hate. If you're looking for sheer fun, then look no further. If you're looking for a sound that's entirely neutral and honest...- Sound Quest

The Entry Level Stax Thread
The SR-009's are really good looking headphones, so i'll give Stax that. I don't however have 4-5000$ to give them. I take it some of these older model headphones are rather vintage?- Sound Quest
