New Zealand meet, May 24th in Auckland
Hmmmm... Highly tempted. Not been doing much serious 'phones listening of late (apart from a pair of QC-15's for the plane - not "seriou"s, but totally worth their weight!) but still very much enjoying hifi. Still could contribute a pair of SONY MDR-CD1700s (almost vintage :D). Pencilled into...- Hamsta

Bad Info at HDCD Site !
Had the same experience with Steely Dan's Two Against Nature - I sent them an e-mail about it and they checked it and pulled it from their listing when they found it wasn't HDCD-encoded. The guy at Microsoft said they'd send me a complimentary HDCD sampler which hasn't ever arrived (not that I'm... -
Headphones aloft
Am going to be taking the big silver bird to London (from New Zealand) in September for my brother's wedding. Being a total of around 20 hours in the air I'll be keen to take my SONY CD1700s and enjoy some of the inflight entertainment (previously I've had to put up with those crap uncomfortable...- Hamsta

Headphone vs. Speaker comparison...
Now, I'm a "speakers" man first and foremost. As much as many here may find it heresy, I really only use headphones as a convenience, much prefering the sound of "open air" hifi. HOWEVER, when it comes to bang-for-buck I think 'phones have it sewn up. There is NO WAY you would be able to get...- Hamsta

A choice of SONYs
Hi everyone - long time, no see Have just done a serch on the archives about this and found the end result a bit up in the air, so thought I'd ask again. I have oppotunity to bid on both a D-EJ01 and a D-EJ915 in the local NZ online auctions. What's everyone's opinions on these? Main...- Hamsta

best telarc discs
If you want recent stuff, and like a bit of Jazz, my favourite Telarc Jazz CDs would have to be..... Oscar Peterson A Summer Night in Munich (1999) - it's like you're there in the hall, and NHOP's bass lines in "Nigerian Marketplace" are AMAZING! McCoy Tyner with Stanley Clarke and Al... -
The year so far...
Well, not quite "retro", but definitely something a bit older. I passed a copy of Marc Cohn's self-titled album from 1991 at my usual music haunt. It was going cheap and I thought "I always quite liked that Walking in Memphis song, so why not." It was a German-made CD too, which always helps... -
Anyone heard of ONEAC power conditioners?
Have seen one of these on a local NZ auction site fairly cheaply (tho' I'd still rather get WIJGALT's Tice A/V Line Conditioner if only the voltage was right ). They seem to be marketed squarely at the IT and Medical industries. Does anyone have any info on them as far as hifi applications go...- Hamsta

Everyone Vote in Stereophile's Headphone Poll!!!
I'm not even a US citizen and I voted. Some of the true headphone right-wing hard-liners may not appreciate my comment though.....- Hamsta

Head-Fi Front Page
Hey jude, I agree with the above thoughts on the simplicity of the front-page. Well set out, easy to read, LOADS QUICKLY! All very important. I found one small glitch(?). I went direct into the Members' Lounge from the frontpage and found that there was nowhere to log-in to reply to this...- Hamsta

ahh!! just got my first credit card!!
OK Gorgon, here's Dr Hamsta'a Financial Breakdown in Credit Cards..... 1) Credit cards are GOOD, as long as you use them and they don't use you! You can defer payment for up to 55 days on stuff which means the $$ stay in your bank account for longer. With most accounts in NZ that means less...- Hamsta

"New" version of Giant Steps
Hey MacDEF We're talking about the version in the buff coloured cardboard sleeve right? I got that a few months back and can't say I was hugely impressed. Don't get me wrong, I loved the tunes, but the production wasn't what I had hoped. Both on 'phones and from speakers it's very much "left... -

Who let the Flecktones out!
Yeah, I've got Cosmis Hippo, Live Art and Left of Cool. All superb albums, but I do have to admit to liking the earlier stuff better and would love to find a copy of UFO TOFU. I've yet to get a copy of Outbound. I do also have Bela Fleck's "Tales from the Acoustic Planet" which is a bit more... -
Head-Fi Logo Store!
Hey Jude, Nice stuff. I'll be interested to see what comes of product development. I'd agree with those who've said that the URL needs to be somewhere on the gear. Not too prominent, but evident. Unfortunately I sit with the UK crew (Ducan, David, Raymond, etc) in that the shipping costs...- Hamsta

Preparing for Latest Tweaks, Part Deux: Ferrites
Cheers for the ridiculously rapid reply, Jude. Can't say I have any unused Ethernet PC Card dongles lying around, whatever the heck they are ! I'm guessing the nice guys at Surplustronics may be able to help me out on that one too. Thanks again Hamsta- Hamsta

Preparing for Latest Tweaks, Part Deux: Ferrites
Very funny coincidence. Have just discussing ferrite clamps at the other hifi forum I frequent, HiFiChoice www.futureforums.co.uk/hifichoice The local surplus electronics shop in town (called "Suplustronics", duh!) has 2 sizes of ferrite clamps. The smaller ones nicely fit round your average...- Hamsta

Weather Report!
I'm a bass player (or would like to be if I could get any time to practice at the moment) and one of the things that interests me about players like Jaco is how much I admire them, but how little I want to be like them. False harmonics, upper register runs and everything (the stuff Jaco is known...
