Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread
Very nice! The HD700's gave me tons of great sound. Hope you are still enjoying them. I have since moved on to the HD800S coupled with a Garage 1217 analog kameleon eq and a Schiit Loki mini plus eq (just for a touch of bass boost). I am thoroughly liking the upgrade . However, I feel the...- garbulky

I agree. The full power mode is spectacular as long as your headphones are at the right impedance where the noise isn't noticeable (and also allows you enough play on the volume). Headphones like the HD800S and HD600S do fine. But lower impedance headphones have issues. Emotiva was going to make...- garbulky

Hey that treble issue and unclean midrange can be significantly reduced by applying the totally reversible no tools modhouse audios HD700 mod kit. If you use both parts, you will have a lot stronger bass, but personally I didn't care for the tone. But using just one (i forgot which one it was) I...- garbulky

Hi no you won't barbecue your headphones. I use it with my HD700's which are 150 ohm impedance with the jumpers. I've also used it with headphones that have less impedance. However, you know make sure you have it at minimum volume and increase from there (common sense). Without the jumpers the...- garbulky

I have the HD700. You would be surprised at what a difference the kit from modhouse makes. It's about $15. It is fully reversible and requires no tools. It comes in two parts. You can use both or just one. A felt ring that encircles the driver and/or three layer felt earpad. Don't want to spend...- garbulky

Try modhouse hd700 mod kit for the hardness. It's reversible and requires no tools. There are two mods in there and each one affects the sound in diffferent ways.- garbulky

Everyday I appreciate the HD700's more and more. :) I really don't understand why it wasn't more of a hit especially at the relatively low price it was selling for before they got discontinued.- garbulky

Where I'm coming from, there is a lot of information to be found in measurements. Imo (so far), those measurements are going a long way in describing the electrical signal of what's coming out of the device. It also has the ability to describe things like impedance of the output and can measure...- garbulky

I love the tech, measurements and build quality that goes into gear. Though how it sounds is for the most part the arbiter, I still pay attention to the above mentioned stuff. Always curious, and I always expect high quality out of my stuff. I didn't find any digital sound in either the DC-1 or...- garbulky

It's contrary to what I've been exposed to. I prefer to get more concrete detail. For instance "subtle detail not captured by standard average measurements" is too vague for me. What about it is not captured? What part of the frequency range/time domain is an AP machine not able to do? Hope...- garbulky

Have only heard the Gungnir multibit. Was among the best DAC's I've heard. It lost in finer treble detail and reproduction of the "hall dimensions" when compared to an Emotiva DC-1. However it had a really impressive sense of timing that I can't describe where things just felt "right". So...- garbulky

I read the threads you linked. The "compensatory distortions" only holds if we can specify what distortions are supposed to be positive for subjective listening. For instance if we can't HEAR these compensatory distortions because they are buried so far down in the signal, it doesn't really...- garbulky

I would like to see some documentation or research that shows that our instruments are insufficient in capturing the subtleties that the ear can tease out. Our instruments can dig way down into the noise floor with greater accuracy than our ears can. While our ears may give out at 60-70 db of...- garbulky

My conundrum here is that if they measure the same but sound different, then it's our perception that's changing. I have listened to plenty of gear that I have a hard time believing it's all in my head. But I can't reconcile that identically measured gear should sound the same, and (logically)...- garbulky

Sure choose one recording as described and then use it across the devices. (Make digital copies to keep the recording the same). I think subjective bias was a misnomer. The brain doesn't hear bias, it hears perception. But my question is the combination of tones rhythms etc. wouldn't they be adequately captured in the minute variations in the signals we can measure? So for instance two dacs with measurements that are...- garbulky

Something I've been curious about - since measurements describe the actual signal coming out of the piece of gear and can also be used to measure impedance and interactions, what would make it sound different other than subjective biases?- garbulky

Sounds tough, but change the motor, raise the price, I mean it's going up anyway, right? Whoever is buying this wants to buy a great turntable at a price that's expensive to them but comparatively a bit of a bargain. Even at a grand that's a lot of money, even though it's a bargain for what they...- garbulky
