ZMF November 2020
Hope Zach doesn't mind me posting these, but here are the two I was hoping for and the one I ended up with (Stella Blue) - no bad choices, I would have been happy with any of about 8 of the sets. Kudos to Zach & Bevin for the way the ordering snafu was handled, and the option of a full...- rpaul

ZMF November 2020
Thanks Zach for always answering so promptly, via email and here. Just need to decide whether to wait for the Stabilized Maple sets being unveiled on Friday. Which has a higher density, and is it much of a difference (for reverb/decay)?- rpaul

Are the "unfigured" Camphor Burl Verite Closed different from the rest of the batch in that run? Just leftover and not as visually appealing?- rpaul

Bowers&Wilkins new flagship the P9!
My opinion is that the P9 is tuned specifically for the way music is mastered (or remastered) today and listened to from an iPhone or iPad, and as such it's kind of pointless to scale them up with something better than the inline DAC that's supplied with it, much less something that's more...- rpaul

Schiit Gungnir DAC
If your comparison is based solely on optical, I'd suggest spending some time comparing using coax/BNC. In my experience those are better for Gumby (granted that also depends upon source used).- rpaul

ZMF Auteur Thread
More like Black Label blended vs. a good 18 year old single malt Scotch whiskey. Had the LCD2C, enjoyed it, but sold it once I got the Teak Auteur. There's a considerable increase in cost but you do get noticeable audible refinement and better build quality. I don't think they're really in...- rpaul

Bowers&Wilkins new flagship the P9!
I think headphones like these, catering to the higher end "lifestyle" segment, will always be polarizing especially for headphone enthusiasts. I do really like mine, although I feel they are overpriced by at least $200 for what you ultimately get. But they're certainly not terrible or the worst...- rpaul

Bowers&Wilkins new flagship the P9!
The 1540 sounds a little rolled-off at the top end compared to the P9, and the P9 presents a wider soundstage. Overall the P9 sounds more like listening to speakers and is more engaging, for music. I still prefer the 1540 for watching movies/shows - for that it seems to offer a more focused...- rpaul

Bowers&Wilkins new flagship the P9!
Acquired taste for sure. Took me a little while to start appreciating them. Overpriced but still worth it to me all things considered. Pushing the pads backwards a bit helped reduce the bass boominess, which also made it a bit more comfortable to wear with glasses. For my ears, the earpad...- rpaul

Bowers&Wilkins new flagship the P9!
Had these for about a week now. The "mid-bass hump" was evident depending on recording (seemed to negatively affect certain male voices). Now having used them for many hours, either my ears/brain have adjusted or maybe the pads/speakers have been broken in a bit, but the bass is not as...- rpaul

Flip it over, labels will be right side up (it's upside down in your pic). Unless this is a joke relating to the fact that it doesn't come with feet so its orientation is ambiguous...- rpaul

Audeze LCD-X
Might stem from the fact that pricing for cables can seem ludicrously high, given that they're just conductive wires wrapped in protective fabric/plastic. I would not debate whether they change the sound of headphones, I have experienced that they can certainly do that in a subtle way (in my...- rpaul

Shure SRH1540 Review
I experienced pretty much the same thing with the P7. There was a lot to like about it, enjoyable low+mids and felt like very resolving high frequencies, but heard that peak you mentioned often enough to annoy me. Pity, actually tried it out 2 separate times, wanted to love it, very luxurious...- rpaul

Shure SRH1540 Review
To me it feels like the 1540 is just slightly more roomy (need to verify by comparing both side by side). The 1540 is considerably more comfortable, especially with glasses on, due to the softer pad material. The HD600 doesn't get nearly as much use as my 1540, since there's not much...- rpaul

Philips Fidelio X2?!
Yes that really differs from person to person and what you think is a reasonable cost to pay for what most (non-audiofool) people would consider very little change in sound. (I'm happy with my home theater setup, and I find myself consuming more streaming video so not much of a need...- rpaul

Philips Fidelio X2?!
Should clarify here - I think more than the amplification power, it was the use of a higher-quality DAC that the X2 responded well to. Had I kept them, I would have been happy to use straight out of iPad/Phone when necessary but they sounded richer/sweeter with the Theorem's DAC. Really just...- rpaul

Philips Fidelio X2?!
Just got the LCD-X, while I was also trying out the X2. Unamped, the X2 sound good, and amped, sound great. Fantastic bang for the buck. Nice upgrade over the X1 in almost every way (though I kind of felt the X1 was more comfortable). But the LCD-X, when paired with a "synergistic" system...- rpaul

Noob looking to get first full-size. Questions about HD-600
Unless you're planning on eventually building up to a system that's able to make the most of the HD600,and you'd rather not bother with the wallet-ache of this (overpriced) hobby, you may be better off with the Phillips X2 as others have mentioned. It's great unamped, and after trying it out I...- rpaul

Comparisons: 36 of the Top Closed/Portable Headphones Around
Funny, I also liked the 380 Pro until I spent time with the P7. You're right about the treble though, there's something "inaccurate/unnatural" about it but at the same time I didn't feel it was enough to detract from the overall musical enjoyment. The 380 Pro is accurate but not very...- rpaul

Shure announcing new SRH1540 in Tokyo today! - Head-Fi TV
To me, straight out of an iDevice I would say it sounds like recessed treble, especially when compared to listening through an amp/dac like the Theorem 720 - which does wonders for the 1540 especially on the top end. So yes, unamped = recessed (rolled off) treble.- rpaul

New Leckerton UHA-6S MKII Portable Headphone Amplifier Announced (Update User Impressions Added July 20th 2012)
Has anyone else been able to directly compare these 2 op-amps? I'm really interested in pulling the trigger on this amp but want to know what the perceived difference is, no matter how subtle, between the 8610 and 4627 specifically. I'd be using this primarily with the SRH1540 and HD600...- rpaul

Cypher Labs Theorem 720 DAC: A New Portable 24/192 USB/iDevice/Android DAC & Amp
Nevermind, as David @ Cypher Labs pointed out, I can just use the Lightning USB cable that came with the Air along with the Mini USB adapter supplied with the Theorem - I had forgotten that it was in the box. Actually much more convenient to use it with the longer cable.- rpaul
