Have anyone tried to BluTack Denons?
I got a new set of Denons for X-Mass, and after about 3 days of burn-in they start to improve from their initial (quite messy) state, but the bass is still quite bloated. I'm hesitant to go for the full markl mod, but I BluTack'd all my closed cans (HD201, HD280) and I know it takes 15min and...- Xakepa

USB to TOSLINK/SPDIF converter
Problem statement - how to deliver bit-perfect KS/ASIO from Compaq 6910p notebook to Entech Number Cruncher DAC. 1) My notebook doesn't have digital out, only USB, and I'm not even sure if I can transfer non-oversampled, bit-perfect redbook thru it ...but that's step one 2)How to apply the...- Xakepa

Getting 44.1KHz bitsteram off TBAAM
I can't get Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro to work with my DAC. Even with FB2000/KS, TBAAM outputs at 48KHz (i.e. resamples), and my DAC can't swallow that. Any ideas?- Xakepa

Healthcare fraud...kinda of a
I recently got two charges from my wife's OB/GYN for a 5-minutes ultrasound "check-up" 2 weeks before delivery - $250 for full "fetal biophysical profile"/CPT code 76818, and seperate one for $220 for a "limited ultrasound"/76815. I called and talked with CNM who preformed the U/S and tried...- Xakepa

Entech Cruncher 203.2 schematics
Have anyone been able to dechipher the schematics of that DAC?...I'm interested in the output LPF and the PS block, as I know nothing about modding of the digital part (supposedly descent jitter suppression design, or so I read)... PCB looks very user friendly so I can try doing that myslef...- Xakepa

Roger Waters drives me nuts
I'm getting really angry by the way my system handles Roger Wates 3 classic releases - Pros and Cons, Radio KAOS and Amused to Death. Detail is there, great dynamics but the soundstage is a complete mess (Pros and Cons), all but missing (KAOS) or poorly resolved (ATD); bass/boxes are flimsy is... -

Iron Maiden Live!
Saw them yesterday night in Boston. Not even a tiny step behind what they've been 5 years ago in Mexico City - a pure outburst of energy and enthusiazm. These guys are really "living for it", Bruce goes all the waaay, allll the time, Janic and H are sharing the solos, the battery is what it's... -
Why the oscilloscopes are so expesive?
For sometime we have a plastic, cheap-looking Tektronix 3032 scope in our lab, which I never used and considered a beater instrument for our undergrads. But when the scope I'm using (Sweden-made Hameg) died, I started looking into this one, and oh my - on ebay it sells at 3300$. And they claim...- Xakepa

Off-topic:USB pen-drives
Over the years I have several USB flash drives, and at least 2 of them developed the same problem - at one point the computer fails to recognize them. Sometimes bending and turning helps, sometimes not. So I decided to open this one, cheapo Viking 256MB, Newegg special. The amount ot solder...- Xakepa

Have anyone fully deciphered the output of AV-710
After busting my old card, I'm in great pain with the new one - DC offset is all over the place. So have anoyone been able to get all the output circuitry of the Wolfson? What I found is that VOUT is fed into zero ohm resistor (bridge?) -> decoupling caps -> 100/47K voltage divider -> ferrite...- Xakepa

Oscillating LDO regulator
Last mod of my AV-710 sound card turned bad - I fried the 5V LDO regulator. Input is +12V from the PCI bus; it's bypassed on the input with generic 10uF/16V elecrtolytic, and on the output with two of those 10uF/16V in parallel. Regulator is AMS1117-5.0 LDO. What I did was to replace the...- Xakepa

Have you tried to rip vynil?
I was fortunate to download a 16/44 rip (apparently from vinyl) of one of my favorite recordings. It cracks here and there, but generally sounds way better than the CD - far more dynamics and wider soundstage. So how to rip from TT, have you tried that?- Xakepa

Why so many people hate Radiohead?
I was looking to buy OK Computer the other day on Amazon (as a gift), considering it being "probably the best recording of the nineties" and OMG it's rated 4.5/5 stars, almost 2000 reviews and many many cruel bashers... Why's all that? Plain ignorance, envy...rage against all that "Towering... -
Sony MDR-V6 - way too bright
I read many raving reviews abouth those here, and I had a chance to try a pair today. They look cool, they fit well, they reveal detail - and that's about it. Sound is way too bright, openly harsh, with some muddy DJ bass and no mid-bass at all. And I compared them with my cheapo 20$...- Xakepa

DAC-101 impressions anyone?
I'm looking for some feedback on this one as an upgrade option for my system. It'll be fed by TOSLink/AV-710 SC and it'll drive AD8620/8610 PIMETA/HD-580 combo. With my current setup I feel I'm lacking some dynamics (no, not because of 580s), bass is suboptimal and there's a slight grain in the...- Xakepa

DYI DAC
Considering DAC being the weakest link in my setup, I'm looking into economical (read cheap) DIY solution to start with. The options I found so far are: -DAC-AH (semi-DYI) - seems OK, but as I'm going to use it with TOSLink out of my AV-710 the jitter could be an issue; DAC-AH does nothing to...- Xakepa

TOSLink feed into Monica 2 DAC
Analyzing my home rig, I decided that the bottleneck is the source, so I consider SC upgrade or external DAC. I'm not happy with "digital" sound of EMU0404, and I see no other upgrade in sub-$100 range, and I don't want to spend >100$ on SC when I'll use only sound reproduction capabilities of...- Xakepa

AV710 in 2 channels (stereo) mode
I somehow lost the ability to get ANY output from Wolfson DAC (rear out) in ANY other mode but "high-res 2". I usually listen to non-oversampled, native KS from FB2K to both speakers and cans - turning on and off the device I like. Now nothing helps, and I tried everything I know, even...- Xakepa

Soundcard DAC - how to improve
I'm trying to get the best out of my AV-710 soundcard, so I have several questions someone might help with -AV-710's WM8728 DAC has an unbuffered output (not like EMU line), and I have 10K pot in my PIMETA. I already upgraded coupling caps with BG. I can't find in the specs Iout max for the...- Xakepa

Faulty reasoning?
I was looking to replace the output caps on my soundcard with Blackgates, and looking at the voltage rating I decided on 22uF/6.3V NXHiQ ... But I'm kind of unsure now... My reasoning is that the the card is on PCI bus, which is powered by eighter 3.3 or 5V AFAIR PCI specs, so there couldn't...- Xakepa

AV-170 schematics
Could anyone pls post the schematics of AV-710 output stage, the one after the Wolfson DAC? From here and there I can conclude there's a passive high-pass (CR) filter, where C is the electrolytic 10uF caps next to the socket, but what about the R, and is there anything else there like amp stage...- Xakepa
