Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I know it's not a huge deal, but Octal LISST are finally here. Also new tube options: http://www.schiit.com/about/news/octal-lisst-new-tube-options

New LISST really is same as the old LISST in a different can. (Same Schiit, different can...yeah, I know, keep the day job.) I'm working on a new chapter, this one maybe in multiple parts, about engineering decisions...which culminates in something you can do DIY if you're interested.

Actually we haven't, and Freya S and Jotunheim 2 are very different products. There's nothing really preventing us from doing so (using LISST in Freya+ already results in a fairly tube-like distortion signature), but we always figured tube and solid state were, well, kinda "never the twain shall...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I've experimented with two different flavors of LISST in the past--one is fairly simple, a nice depletion MOSFET and associated protection/gain-setting stuff in a can, the other more complex, and intended to have a transfer function more similar to a triode. The latter also requires DC heaters...

And to confirm, you can use LISST in Vali 2. It has slightly less gain (about 4 in high gain), but otherwise it works fine.

If you're interested, I'll definitely get you some new LISST out before we start shipping so you can compare. They are a bit different.

...old Lyr 3 required this, otherwise gain switching would be a big problem. The Lyr+ monitors operational parameters and only connects when everything is OK. That said, Lyr 3 is no slouch! We'll have LISST available for purchase individually soon. Give us a couple of weeks to ramp up production.

We never tested them in other applications. They may work, they may not. Past LISST should be safe to try in other stuff, as long as the plate voltage isn't over about 450V. However, "should be" and "is" are two very different statements, and if they go poof, please don't blame me.

Hey all, A quick announcement: the death of tubes has been greatly exaggerated! 6SN7 tubes are back for Freya+, specifically Tung-Sol 6SN7GTB. LISST are available too. More tomorrow. Not on tubes. All the best, Jason

...chassis size IS a huge pain in the ass for someone who wants to stack gear. But again, nothing is set in stone. I'm just blue-skying here. LISST sold pretty well to start, then dropped off a cliff. Novals are now out of stock and not listed as options. Octal will soon get there, and we...

...Then Freya N is for you. It’s a Freya...that uses noval tubes. Simple as that. Oh, and it even costs a bit less than Freya+! The Return of LISST. Want a tube-like device that will always work? Then Freya+ with LISST, our Linear, Integrated, Solid-State Tube is for you. We made LISST a few...

Short answer: 2nd gen LISST was going to be different, but ended up being the same. Sometimes my great ideas ain't so great. Ah, but I should also specify: electrically the same. The case will be different, with a phenolic base and rounded top, rather than the older squarish version. However...

That's what I'd do. Also if you're using a single input, swap inputs L and R to see if it's on the input side. If it follows the input swap, the problem isn't the amp. Mjolnir 2 has shared tube power supplies except heaters...are both tubes lighting up? That's another thing to check.

...we thought we'd pick up exactly where we left off: with blind listening. Specifically, you'll get to compare Freya+ with tubes vs Freya+ with LISST vs a Freya tweaked for 6N1P Noval tubes. We're setting this up as double-blind and level-matched, so nobody will know which is which. I think...

      1. Of course. 2. Yes, the tube is active all the time. As I posted before, if you don't want it, just leave it out. Or wait for octal LISST.

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Hey all, So I said that we'd be making an announcement this week, one that would help with the tube nervosa. Of course, as soon as I said this, Murphy mobilized his cosmic forces against us, so no announcement is gonna be made. Especially since it's Elvis' birthday tomorrow (our Elvis, not that...

...that hot, chassis-wise, you don't need a ton of ventilation--but the Freya tubes should have a few inches above them on a rack at least. When LISST is available, you can always go that way to make it run cooler, or leave the tubes out entirely. 6. You get XLR and RCA output on Freya from all...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Simple: Freya Noval didn't sell, despite being the same preamp as Freya+ with 6N1P tubes. Get one now if you want one, it's a great deal. We won't be making any more, but of course you get full warranty and support.

...to do the year-in-review. Though I suppose I could, we don't really have anything else new to introduce this year. Well, unless the Octal LISST get done a bit early. These are the same as the regular LISST, but fit the octal sockets in a Saga and Freya. This should provide a solution for...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

100% working. Different tubes need different plate loads, different current, different plate voltages. We changed Freya Noval to optimize for Noval tubes like 6N1P, not octals like 6SN7.

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

...drivers issues have been cleared up, and since we've moved to octal tubes (inserting a noval tube wrong is not easy, but hey, we've seen octal LISST inserted wrong--which is a ceramic key in a ceramic socket, wowzers). So yes, we're hypersensitive to it. We're also hypersensitive to getting...

...(long story short, lots of Russian tubes, though we get them thru the Ukraine--yes, even now). Let that melt your head. I won't fault anyone for coupling wallet to conscience and staying out of the morass. You can always do LISST if you're going the Freya+ route, made right here in Simi...

...sustain our production, you’d be looking at dedicating one or more staff to doing this full-time. Seriously. So that’s not viable. Bring back LISST. Although LISST was difficult to make and not super-popular, it would give us a viable tube replacement and allow us to ship something as a...
