Think it belongs to the device I have the same experience on my A45 walkman, volume changes when switching between the modes. It's different on my WM1A, there is no volume change from direct sound to EQ settings.

It's important to understand the difference between analog and digital. With an analog signal you can have degradation, it can go from really good to less good to bad to no signal at all. With digital you either get a perfect signal or you don't get a signal, there's nothing between those two...

Ordered a Z1R here in austria from Media Markt yesterday and....got it today. Data sheet shows manufactured 05/2023. Looked on ebay for a new or used from Japan, but including the taxes it costs nearly the same so I decided to take this offer. Only listened a view songs now....but yes sounds great.
