How could you do DIY shielding for a portable headphone amp?
The cheapest form of shielding is separation, so keep the phone as far from the amp as possible. The pickup may not be radiated emissions anyway, it's more likely inductive if you have the devices in close proximity. Or just put the phone on 3G when you're using it for music.- wakibaki

Making own tube amp from scratch?
A tube amp is very attractive in some ways, but it's hard to get off the ground. You need transformers, tubes, it's dangerous, expensive. You can experiment with solid state amplifiers for virtually zero cost. You can scrounge PSUs and high power transistors from scrap, although many...- wakibaki

Defeating Subjectivist Arguments - Strategy and Tactics
Subjectivist thinking is flawed. Subjectivist arguments always depend on a misrepresentation. If a scientist is worth his salt he will defeat a subjectivist on a level playing field. In order to maintain a subjectivist outlook a disorganized personality is required. A inconsistent...- wakibaki

Measuring output of IEM's
You could measure the voltage across them and calculate what they are outputting. This would assume that everything output is coupled to your eardrums, but this should be the case with IEMs. You also have to depend on the manufacturer's spec being accurate. The easiest way to see what is...- wakibaki

Does ripping from Vinyl get better sound than ripping CDs to lossless?
OK, here we have a digital master. Shall we put it straight onto a CD or record it onto vinyl and then re-record the vinyl? No, we should put every track on a 45 and play it over AM radio and then re-record it. Just how stupid do I have to make the examples before you stop laughing...- wakibaki

Skeptico Saloon: An Objectivist Joint
Short answer, yes, its not erratic. It depends primarily on the input impedance of the IEM. Most transducers input impedance varies with frequency. The amplifier output splits between the amplifier internal impedance and the headphone impedance, so different fractions appear at different...- wakibaki

Testing audiophile claims and myths
Yes, this is what I find puzzling. Where I live there's a big issue over energy prices. Gas, electricity. The wholesale gas price goes up, the price to the consumer goes up, the wholesale gas price comes down, the price to the consumer stays the same. Except people kicked up so much they...- wakibaki

Skeptico Saloon: An Objectivist Joint
I don't like the frequency response. It's 40-15000Hz for a start, when I'd prefer to see 20-20,000. If these are the manufacturers figures, I suspect the flatness is a lot worse for the extended range. With 32 ohms, a -1.66 dB dip is quite noticeable. 0.1 dB is a perceptible difference...- wakibaki

Does ripping from Vinyl get better sound than ripping CDs to lossless?
So what? I've heard hundreds of CDs that were far better than any vinyl. Put quite simply, a CD presented with the same program material as was presented to the vinyl will be less likely to suffer problems than any re-recording via vinyl. This is a simple audiophile principle 'the less...- wakibaki

24bit vs 16bit, the myth exploded!
Sorry, I didn't realise your symptoms were so florid. So are there any audio devices that you reject as scams? How 'bout the Lessloss Blackbody? Do you believe that bit-identical files sound different if ripped on a regular computer or one with a low-noise PSU? Or if the destination medium...- wakibaki

Rubbish. It's well known that a sufficiently loud explosion can perforate your eardrums. Instantaneously.- wakibaki

24bit vs 16bit, the myth exploded!
Did he say that? If he didn't he should have. Every now and again you pushers push the envelope out of shape. We need an antithetical model to put up against the barrage of senseless crap based on the necessity for recording sounds that nobody can demonstrate they can hear. There's a lot...- wakibaki

Capacitance of the ESL diaphragm (questions about how the ESL works)
'Ground' or 'Earth' is one of the most troubling concepts for budding engineers to come to terms with. Frequently understanding only dawns when it is required to design an antenna system or RF output amplifier. Earth is not just a place to send large unwanted currents in an emergency. The...- wakibaki
