HD650 or other suggestions?
I suggest you get the HD650 and the best USB DAC/amp you can afford. I would expect a DAC/amp in the $300 range to be more than satisfactory. Maybe a Fubar III or something. With all due respect to the friendly, knowledgeable, and well intentioned people around here, it is easy for an...- rederanged

Best drive for EAC ripping?
At the risk of asking the obvious: Do you have EAC in 'secure' or 'paranoid' mode? If so, put it in the mode where it does not do error checking. Itunes - setup question
It also might be EQ. Sometimes those "Bass Boost" settings are enough to push the signal into clipping.- rederanged

Itunes - setup question
Yeah, it's unlikely that a bad rip would cause distortion like that. Like those guys ^^ said, it's probably in the original recording.- rederanged

You guys must have some amazing luck. I've made dozens of trips to thrift stores and have never seen anything better than the occasional trashed 1985 Magnavox tape deck for $40. Often there's some good vinyl, though, so I keep going. -
help me check something
No. That's a line out adapter only. It allows you to bypass the internal iPod amplifier so you can connect the iPod to an external amp. You might be able to physically plug in your headphones, but the line out is not going to have anywhere near enough power to drive them. -

That sounds about right. The bit rate is post compression, i.e., the compressed file size divided by the track length.- rederanged
