thank you for your time, anyway, Brooko.   I just installed the Mediubuntu repository and added all the the plugins for low latency sound cards and USB devices. The sound quality seems different but I still hear a lot of crackling sounds.

I'm using a USB cable and selecting USB audio DAC from the hardware options for sound.

I don't know. I installed linux partly because I did not have a windows CD, and I had been given the laptop, pre-owned
