    I bought these a while back to commute with on the train, hoping to block out some of the noise. Not only do they do that, but they sound great.

    You can't compare 555's and 280's. They are designed differently and they will sound differently.

    Grado's didn't come with a converter...

    I'm sure they can all be driven fine without an amp. I would like to start using an amp though.

    ...so I figure I might as well look at amps. Both my Senns came with plugs to step up / down (555's came with a 1/4" to 1/8" and the 280's came with a 1/8" to 1/4") so I put off buying an amp. I decided that I shouldn't wait.    What would you recommend for a desktop amp? Current budget is...

    I really like this pair of headphones. I bought them as my first "good" pair of headphones and now I'm addicted. I cannot go back to muddled base and blown out highs. If you're looking for a solid introduction to excellent headphones I don't think you can go wrong with these.
