If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

I agree, but I also like a lot of music that unfortunately was very badly recorded, much as I love great sound. So in those cases it is handy to have "colored" equipment to make these sound tolerable. But often, straight is still best.

If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

I am not a big fan of any headphones in general and get many different ones because they all bother me in one way or another. The ones that satisfy me most especially when listening to the best recorded classical music are the Etys. Compared to almost everyone on this forum, I am an old fogey...

    Massdrop x NuForce EDC3 IEM

Just got these last week and have mixed feelings. I find the treble too depressed to be acceptable for classical music that is well recorded, but it's ok with digital equalization. My very old Etymitics are much better as is the Mee Audio P1 which is equally smooth but more revealing. However...

    Budget IEM for long flights

What is the best budget IEM for long flights? I like neutral or mildly warm sound. I am not a bass head and listen primarily to classical music, and jazz and a little classic rock. I like the Ety sound but find them fragile and uncomfortable for really long (8-14 hour) flights. I also like...

    Hifi shops in Suzhou/Shanghai area?

Hey easily_amused. I'm heading to Beijing next week. Where should I go to shop for budget IEMs and accessories? Thanks.

    Beijing Hifi

I'm going to spending a week in Beijing for work. Are there any shops to visit or things to buy that are cheap and easy to pick up vs. ordering online? I'm thinking $10-$30 nice IEMs, ear bud tips, wires, etc. Maybe a really good cheap DAC. Also which shops in Beijing to get this stuff. Thanks.

    Sighted training and blind tests

The first step to better sound is a better model of hearing and subjective valuation of what we hear. I believe that the tendency to treat accuracy as about electrical neutrality rather than perceived accuracy is a big issue. Furthermore, even more than in medicine, blind adherence to the 95%...

    Sighted training and blind tests

Well as I noted for side effects in medicine, they clearly matter. And for other work, it's interesting for scientists because the hard to prove can be important in different contexts. In finance, in psychology, in genetics, many things are hard to prove but are potentially very important. If...

    Sighted training and blind tests

Of course one has to be careful. That's why I tried to followup but no one responded. I have published multiple statistical studies in econ and psychology journals so I am aware of the issues involved. But there has also been much progress in both stats and econ in using more sophisticated...

    Sighted training and blind tests

Can someone point me to any recent studies that have followed up very old AT&T work on training people to hear differences? I vaguely remember an old AT&T or Bell Labs study showing that people who could not identify a low frequency tone mixed in with noise were able to reliable identify the...

Sony HAP-Z1ES. New High-Res Streamer/Music Server from Sony

Can anyone help me? I've just purchased a Sony HAP Z1ES but I can't seem to explore the hard drive. I can transfer files to it without issue but cannot see what's on the hard drive through the Music Transfer app so as to be able to copy stuff off the Sony back onto my computer. The Explore...
