    K701 thread

hey... I must say I think the HD650 is a superb can! I listened to it a while ago at a high-end salon powered by the Bryston amp that looks like a pre. Source was CD, a Krell with the ultra quiet transport and reddish display. I chose K701 because I opted for its sound signature. Neutral, that is.

Don't know about the seller's testing method, but those are relatively early meaning they can take more than 450 on the plate. I've seen later G.E.s which cannot handle ~500vdc anode volts without some plate 'blushing' which of course can release elemental deposits in the anode, thus ruining the...

    Headphone Sightings 2

red and white 'beats' by monster , pizzeria last week. various(!) earbuds/iems whatever the current buzzword is. i couldn't name one pair. In town, by the stores, at the beach in summer, at work. but to date, the best sighting I've seen was probably Sennheiser HD-580s on vacation in New Mexico.

    Calling All "Vintage" Integrated/Receiver Owners

Regarding the SX-1980. I had a one-owner SX-1280 which I lost in hurricane Sandy. i needed to replace the volume attenuator, ACV-163 since it had a buzzing when i touched the knob. and intermittently during operation. Worn tracks in the part. That being said, it was as mint a unit as is...

    Schiit Magni Headphone Amplifier

of course the Magni and Modi conform to fcc 15(b). if they didn't, neither would be as popular since both would be considered non-compliant, and relegated to sketchy eBay listings, etc. IMO   To have sporadic noise induced into the amp's power supply cord is a totally separate kettle-o-fish.

hey hodgjy , I'd love to hear that system. Enjoy!

(My) First Impressions with Schiit Magni

Ha ! What I meant is that we all learn as we go along. Hell, I used to possess an entirely different set of viewpoints.

(My) First Impressions with Schiit Magni

Often times, as is the case with Schiit Magni, the volume potentiometer is simply an input attenuator. All you'd notice is a lower volume-knob position for equal volume. Still, awful idea to " double-amp ". The novice will always realize their mistakes later on in this hobby.

(My) First Impressions with Schiit Magni

No it is very uncommon. Poor practice, if you ask me. What you're essentially doing is adding gain where it is not needed. Also, to feed output of one amplifier into the input of another is totally backwards if you are seeking signal purity.

Somewhere in my attic, I have a 1950s Admiral black and white television chock-full of those Sylvania 6SN7s (with elongated gettering). I may pull them and sell them. I could easily insert a lesser tube in that tv chassis and get the same performance.

    Schiit Magni Headphone Amplifier

Right on ! Last night, late, I spun for the first time a copy of Berlioz-Harold In Italy on Columbia stereo LP.. It took fifty years before my copy got a listen, and it was worth the wait :) Although some of those '60s Columbia pressings were miked oddly.   It certainly seems that this...

    Schiit Magni Headphone Amplifier

I'm tempted to try one of their DACs..and yes, definitely the best 99 bucks i've spent in audio thus far!

    Schiit Magni Headphone Amplifier

Well, volume potentiometer position is very relative of course. Meaning, not only is source a factor, but individual track levels due to mastering can vary quite a bit.   Gee this thread has died out. I am still using number 171 with my AKG 701s to great avail . Using a wide range of source...

    Schiit Magni Headphone Amplifier

+1 on Furman. Even their lesser offerings are superb for the coin. A system usually sounds better after " Furmanizing " !! :) Unusual that the Magni sounds better in my system straight-into the wall. But then again, I'd never use a power conditioner for amplification unless it was a regenerator.

in my computer rig, the channel imbalance is a non-issue for me. It is very minor; as in, under 9 o'clock. I listen between the range of ~10-1 o'clock position. Musical Fidelity VDAC mkII >Magni> AKG k701

    Calling All "Vintage" Integrated/Receiver Owners

Regarding the Sansui 331 being used 24-7 or close to it-- In my collection I have a Sansui 771 stereo solid state rcvr that looks like it was hit by a truck. No dial lamps work, the balance shaft is busted off, and most knobs are gone. It plays wonderfully, if not a few MHz off on the fm...

    Schiit Magni Headphone Amplifier

I routinely run my speaker amps directly to the wall, bypassing my Furman line conditioner. The Magni I have (serial 171) sounds pretty much the same via the conditioner or not; but I have it plugged directly into the wall outlet(10awg 20A dedicated duplex for my hifi rig) and you know, it is...

    Schiit Magni Headphone Amplifier

Merkil is exactly correct. They are in-line RCA attenuators comprised of resistors. The good ones are capable of attenuation across the audible band evenly; beware the cheaper type which can cause 'spikes' at certain frequencies due to uneven electrical suppression. I used to run inline...

    Calling All "Vintage" Integrated/Receiver Owners

Personally I'd never pay anything near 1k for a Superscope Marantz made in Japan. The true Marantzi are the tube units which justify that kind of coin. I did however, spend many happy hours listening through a 2250B...It was a great piece but then again i got it for free on the curb and fixed it...

    Calling All "Vintage" Integrated/Receiver Owners

Thanks, we are back home now but there is still a lot of work to do. Believe it or not, the 1280 was among the least valuable of the electronics I lost. I can't even think about what went down. Hindsight....

    Calling All "Vintage" Integrated/Receiver Owners

most vintage integrateds and receivers run their headphone output directly off the final stage of the speaker amps via dropdown resistors. This configuration can supply a vast amount of power. However, as with most things, there is a drawback. Depending on your headphones, the output impedance...

    Calling All "Vintage" Integrated/Receiver Owners

The Pioneer SX650 utilizes thick-film-hybrid output devices. They are early integrated circuits, the Sanken SP-40W. These outputs contain the final stage as well as the bias stage.   Do not run 4 ohm speaker loads with an sx650 if you're heavy-handed with the tone controls/loudness, or of...

Anyone found their headphone nirvana yet?

back when I used to restore Fisher 400s and 500Cs as a side biz I had headphone nirvana on a pair of grado sr325i original goldies powered by a Darkvoice 337? iirc tube amp which I rolled antique but strong tubes into. they were G-E branded, of course. G-E was such a powerhouse in the tube era...

    Schiit Magni Headphone Amplifier

so, now my Magni has 289 Hrs of burn-in on it, and the akg k701 headset has 334 Hrs on it. Pink noise on computer and fm stereo 'hip hop' nonsense station divided evenly.   Yes, I keep detailed logs of all my equipment, especially gramophone styli and cartridge.   Anyway. I am running a...
