Ah! Njoe Tjoeb 4000 CDP arrived today!
Actually, it's not so important that any one playback component be 100% acurate. It's much more important that the owner/listener enjoy the sound. If that means a less-than-perfect presentation (as in the case of the 4000 we're talking about) then who cares about specs? The analog sound has been...- elambo

Pioneer DV-47Ai - (very) Initial Impressions
Quote: Originally posted by Czilla9000 It is probably a number of factors. But I am pretty certain that since even DSD recording need to at one point in time be converted to quasi-PCM, DVD-A is superior FOR NOW. Once a pure DSD bitsteam process comes out SACD should take the lead...- elambo

Mdr-v6 = Mdr-v600 ???
Yep, V6 and 7506 are the same. The difference is that the 7506 has some user replaceable parts, V6 doesn't. Both are better than the V-600 for sure...- elambo

SACD = crap?
Joe - I haven't heard DVD-A yet, but I've heard 24bit/96K and 24bit 192K very briefly directly off of a recorder. Both are impressive, but I haven't been able to do any critical listening to DVD-A... YET! I'm eagerly awaiting the Pioneer Elite universal players that are coming out soon. More to...- elambo

SACD = crap?
I love specs. I could talk specs all day and never get bored. But the problem with specs is that they're a technical and scientific way to describe what is in all actuallity a non-scientific phenomenon - music. An emotional experience triggered by auditory stimuli. That's the other side of the...- elambo

Distorted highs with the Sony Sony DVP-NS500V?
radrd - I don't think they were implying that the Sony was distorting, I think they were saying that the receiver was. Distortion from the ns500 shouldn't be an issue unless they had a bad unit.- elambo

Good ..erm.. microphone?
Guyferd - are you going to be recording male or female vocals? What type of music will you be putting underneath these vocals? You'll be able to find a slew of mics for around $100, and what you're recording will help decide which mic is best. Let us know...- elambo

Interesting experience with my roomates reciever

Recording Fidelity and Reproduction: Real-World Systems
Matt - you have a great point. This is something that a lot of us must have noticed at some point. Because of this there are some recordings that are better enjoyed by less revealing systems. I have heard so many albums that I really enjoy on less-than-hi-fi systems, but I don't get nearly...- elambo

question on toslink cable purchase
Better focus is what you should notice with less jitter. The DIP will help you with jitter but to help even more you should probably have a better cable than the $6 one you're using now. I had a DIP for a month or so to help with the jitter I was getting from a DVD player, but I wanted something... -
Percentages on components?
taoster - that might be an example of components that fall outside the thresholds of our reference. I would be fearful of listening to a Walgreens-brand PCDP with HD600's. It would be a rare example of a better scenario for the standard HD600 cable instead of the Cardas.- elambo

taoster - I had to go back and edit my last post because I misspelled Klipsch (an easy thing to do) and I just saw your post. Thanks, I do enjoy Head-fi. I've never journeyed very far into the world of headphones because there are a couple standard models in the studio realm and I've almost...- elambo

crescendo - oh boy, where do I begin... One thing I appreciate about head-fi forums is the open-mindedness of it's members and their resistance to confrontation. I don't get line outs...
Actually, the difference IS that one has the ability to be attenuated (headphone jack) and the other doesn't (line out). The whole purpose of a line out is just as you said, fyleow - to bypass any type of amplification or preamplification for use with an external amp. If you're able to alter the...- elambo

The more you spend on electronics the less you need to spend on speakers. The more you spend on speakers the more you need to spend on electronics. Why? Great speakers will reveal all the problems you have with your electronics and you'll be annoyed by this. It's easiest to blame the...- elambo

Is your system only as good as the weakest part?
Everything in the audio chain has a sound. EVERYTHING will have some affect on the audio, but most of those components have a very small, typically unnoticed affect. A direct answer to your question - will the system be only as good as it's weakest adapter - basically, yes, if the entire audio... -

SACD purchasing question
I haven't found a good way to tell yet. Unfortunately, it takes a little research to figure that out. One clue is to look at the date the session was recorded. If it was over two years ago the odds are that it's remastered from other sources - which source is another question. Even the most...- elambo

Who is using the Sony DVP-NS500V?
I got one from crutchfield.com earlier this week. For all that it does it's an absolute steal. The SACD side sounds great and the redbook side is very good, too. Oh yeah, and it's also a DVD player that LOOKS good, too - they through that in for free. I've been letting it play around the...- elambo

sony sacd bargain
mbriant - I have to agree with you about companies completely dissing the CD during it's launch - they all did. But 20 years later CD technology has improved enough to at least compete at even the highest levels of vinyl playback. Now these companies have all rolled over into supporting CDs, but...- elambo

SACD purchasing question
I think I should clear something up about remastering. It seems many people feel that older recordings are stuck in the past sonically - this is not true. Just because you buy a CD, which is 16bit/44.1KHz, don't think that the album was recorded at 16bit/44.1. This is just the delivery method...- elambo
