I  have now gotten my dirty little hands on the O2+odac and are extreamly happy with how my DT990s perform now, contra how they were with the old Astro Mixamp using optical from my pc. I am not surprised it performs better though. There is more sound at equal noise levels, I hear its more power...

As a rule of PC thumb, get the newest. Howeve it is simply a uninstall / reinstall and you should be good to go if something strange happens with one of the other. Can't go wrong here

Quick update, ended up with the Objective 2 + ODAC combo, made in the EU. With the plugs in the back, just the connections I need and made in the EU. Good reports of how the DT990s sound with it. 

  That seemed like a huge rabbit hole after reading a bit about it. There are no way of getting DD live from usb or coax? In the realtek manager itself?

Yes, but this was only a problem the first 30 mins using them gaming, not broken in. Literally the first mins using them. With the volume at the mixamp at max and using Doulby Atmos for headphones that Overwatch has. Since then I have not had that problem.

  Lol. OK! Thanks. So are there any rule of thumbs? Set Windows settings to output DD (or whatever surround setting) and dont change anything in game (dont use 'headphone', use speakers)? Do PC games even support doubly digital over caox / optical?
