HDCD list
After installing the foobar plugin I've noticed some CDs I ripped long ago showing up as HDCD (with PE). When I try decoding sample tracks from them with eac3to (using -decodehdcd) they all come up with a constant/average bit depth of 17. Is something wrong with the way eac3to decodes them... -
Mini Dac TDA1543 X 4 NOS
Your photos are great. I can't even pretend to understand what you've done but it helps to see the finished work. I somehow missed hearing about removing those caps at C8 and C9. Does that have a similar effect to removing the ones at C6 and C7? I'm wary of those just in case my amp (or...- fumbles

Thanks for the photos It helps to see the actual mods. If I rolled up strips of tin foil and taped them in place with insulating tape, would that short out the caps without using solder? Ideally, I'd just like to see if/how the mods work without making any permanent or visible changes.- fumbles

What are the caps there for originally? Will removing them have any knock-on effect electrically?- fumbles

Do you mean all 4 of the caps (as seen in this pic) or just the 3 that sit between the TDAs? I still have to try removing/shorting the output caps but if you think removing these other ones helps the sound as well I might give that a try too.- fumbles

I might try this but how can I tell if an amp has input capacitors? Short of opening it up and looking (and even then I wouldn't know what to look for). Quote:- fumbles

Mini Dac TDA1543 X 4 NOS
I dug out a 9v 500mA PSU and the DAC ran just fine with it. However, the PSU got quite hot after a while. I'm mostly using a 9v 1.2A regulated supply for now. It's a brick but it works fine. The 12v PSU that came with the DAC was rated 1.5A. This is with the white PCB DAC with the 15-18v...- fumbles

I briefly tried the PSU it came with but didn't like the buzzing noise coming out of it. When I cranked up the PSU I have been using to 12v I noticed the unit got warm fairly quick. So I guess I'll stick with 9v.- fumbles

And I'm still running mine on 9v. Maybe it's not a good idea to be using such a drop in voltage (?) but it seems to be working fine. Quote:- fumbles

Are you using the 12v adapter it came with? I see the AMS1117 there is 5v, same as mine. Quote:- fumbles

Yep it came with a 12v adapter. I emailed them to ask about the different components and from the broken english reply I gather they may have made some improvements to the design. They recommended I use the 12v adapter that it shipped with, but I ran it for a few hours with a 9v one instead just...- fumbles

Quote: Mine also says 15-18v on the DC-IN. The PCB is white and under the heatsink is a label saying "2010.01.22 ver 01". It also has the 5v regulator :( Any idea if this is an older version of the ones with the blue PCB? What does the label under the heatsink on the blue PCB...- fumbles

Quote: I've used it a little but I'm wouldn't be comfortable running it 24/7. It works well though :) I'm using a phone for my portable music these days too. Sounds good to my ears anyway. Quote: If mine has a 5v regulator when it arrives, will it run OK so long as I...- fumbles

Mini Dac TDA1543 X 4 NOS
Hi all I found this thread when I was looking for a cheap and good DAC for my PC here. After reading through the first and last few pages I went ahead and ordered one of these ones. I'm just a little concerned about the overheating. Will this happen even in a stock config? I'm not going to be...- fumbles
