It does sound fine and I've verified all the outputs work properly along with DAC mode.  Considering the price I got it for I don't mind to much if it's a refurb.    So far it's a pretty good improvement over my old X1.  I just didn't want to spend $299 for the gen 2 and really wanted 2 sd...

Well I put my d2000 pads on my he400 and I'm really liking the comfort now. Wish I had tried this earlier, looking forward to the j$ pads I'm getting. Gonna have to cannibalize my pleather hifiman pads for the dust guard.

HE-400, it's a little above your limit but it's bass, detail and speed makes hiphop sound awesome.  Hiphop is generally my favorite genre and I can say with no question that they are the best I've heard so far for hiphop including the 650.
