24 db boost in the sub-bass? Heck why not just go for 50 or even 75. Make it an orgy of bass. Now I dont know if that makes it a best headphone -- or even a best bass. Maybe the most bass if the tones are not totally wrecked in distortion.

Yes its hard to know where your treble is if the bass is walking all over it.

For $300 you could get the B&W P5 which are light and comfy and are generally evenly balanced in sound. Ditto the Beyerdynamic DT-1350 which are less bright than the P5 but also reasonable in comfort and have a wide range quality sound. Both are very well made and on-ear and I think both are closed.

This is great stuff. One persons listening preferences may be just that but when many headphones are compared in such detail much useful information emerges.

I have heard the HD800 described by a few people as slightly bright but you are the first I have heard to say sharp and harsh. Must be some really bad source material. And youre right that the 1350 suckout is only "10 additional db" below normal. But then 10 db below normal is a lot.

And just so you dont get the wrong idea I hope you are right about the 1350 and I am wrong because I so much wanted to love that headphone and buy one to keep. The bass is to kill for. If it turns out to be highly regarded I will retrain my brain to love the new kind of sound.

And BTW the notion that the general public would prefer a "rolled off" treble isnt supported by any statistics I have heard. Rolled off treble on a low budget peaky crappy sounding headphone maybe. But you dont get Sennheiser HD800 sound for cheap. I cant even imagine if HD800 sound were...
