Hi, I just bought a sony mdr sa5000 in brand new condition. Is it worthed to upgrade the cable with a xlr connection since I have a iFi Audio Pro iCan. I would notice a great improvement in terms of quality or I can just leave it the way it is? Regards
Congratulations, and I am jealous that u can still find brand new one. Upgraded cables is essential

You should do it. In fact, it's a must to bring out the best performance out of these Sony. I highly recommended a really good copper cable to tame the high and bring out noticeably better bass performance. It's a much better headphones than stock. The stock cable can't even be rewired for balanced connection due to a common ground after the Y splitter.

Replacement pads are available on ebay but sadly not an exact replica to the original. Get its recable with warm and smooth cable...and you will be grinning ear to ear!

Has anyone got a link to a decent recable walkthrough please?
Google isn't really bringing anything up for me...
Thanks in advance!

Thanks chaps, Yes I'm ok with soldering. Glad to hear it's straightforward, Although I am toying with sending them off. I just don't like the thought of them being lost stolen or damaged, As they're not exactly easily replaceable these days.

You can do it. Hard wire directly to the driver is very easy on the SA5000. You will be rewarded in less than an hour time.

Well I took the plunge and made a start today, I successfully dissassembled them and cut the HD600 wire out.
It was as straight forward as was suggested so thank you folks for giving me the confidence to have a go at this.
I'll be ordering a new cable next week with a few extra bits n bobs. I have an idea and I hope and pray it works.
Shall keep you all posted
