there were some comments (focalprice site) about an aluminum headshell yet your photos seem to indicate all plastic?  can you shed any light on this?

& do you still have hd600 to confirm comparison? or is this based upon your recollection of how hd600 sounds?

The grill is aluminum. (not shown in my photos)

Yeah, I actually do have the HD600's, but all I'm saying is that the soundsig is similar.
Not that the mh463 matches up to the HD600, because it does not. (just to clarify

This is probably a clear downgrade from the takstar pro 2050. It has the same price and miles better build quality than what these look to be (Metal vs Plastic). and that High fidelity headphones on the yoke looks really tacky to me.

Clear downgrade in terms of build quality? They dont seem all that bad to me. The headband on the Somic seems to be built fairly sturdy; not sure about the cups though. If it has similar hard plastic cups as the HPT990 I won't complain. I ordered a pair a few days ago so I guess ill have to see when/if they eventually get here.

Vents on driver housing taped

Left, replacement pads put on Somic; right, pad donor phones, Philips SHP2000

Although the sound sig becomes very neutral after these two mods, the loss of subbass is something I don't want.  Right now I'm using the stock pads again, with tissue under the padding to increasing their height, similar to what's been done here to the Superlux 668b
http://www.geeksreviews.net/superlux-hd668b-a-tough-challenger-for-the-high-end-headphone/

I think the loss of subbass is occuring because the cloth pads leak air.  If replacement pleather / leather pads can be found that would increase comfort without sacrificing bass.

Interesting. What do you guys think about this pair?

Looks like it share's the same drivers according to specs. And the look is much interesting to me.

Nah, I think some of the listings have incorrect specs for those. If you look at the back of the box here
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Shock-Release-Somic-MH438-Stereo-Headband-Headphone-HIFI-Professional-DJ-Monitoring-Headset-Free-shipping/551689820.html
You'll see that MH 438 has 40mm drivers with 32ohms of impedance, whereas the MH 463 has 50mm drivers with 45ohms of impedance. Definitely not the same drivers.

I also picked up a set of these cans thanks to this thread. I've been looking to upgrade to a nice set of circumaural open cans for a while now, and settled on these because of the price and OP's review. It sounds like these are exactly what I was looking for, but we shall see.

I picked them up from Aliexpress here: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Professional-Somic-MH463-3-5MM-Head-band-Music-DJ-Headphone-Earphone-Headset-MH463-free-shipping/623880419.html

hey Carlsan, just wondering how do you order from taobao if you live in the states??? I notice that your link is to a buying agent, so i am just wondering how it works. Thanks in advance!

Register with taobao, then add item to cart, then pay (add money to account) using AliExpress or other service they list. I used AliExpress.
They explain it as you do it.
Once you have paid AliExpress then you have to let taobao know order number, then you have to go back to Taobao and actually use the funds for payment.

Crazy, yes, but it worked, or so I will confirm when I get my headphones!

@carlson

You know what sucks the most? The fact you ordered and went through all those steps and will still beat me to my package. My ebay seller has yet to ship the item and it's been a whole week since my order was completed. This company has really gotten me to be very curious in hopes they make cheaper yet better headphones.

PS. Nice collection.

Mine have yet to ship as well, and since they are coming from China it will be awhile.

Thanks for the compliment on my collection, some of the headphones/earphones I have listed I have sold or am selling.

My latest edition is a pair of hd600's, bought them to compare to the 650's which are currently my oldest headphones in my collection. So far I much prefer the 600's but that's for another thread.
