Quality is better than size but how about electrolytics bypassed with film? 1000 to 100 is kind of a drastic reduction.

the melos has, hmm, 8 screws just for the lid, and they aren't all interchangable either, annoyingly. keep those screws in the right order if you can!

i tried a hybrid of a big film with a big electrolytic with my "elcheapo diy tubeamp" and did not like the results.

from that amp, i have a total of just over 150uf (all cheap motor-run film caps) in the psu for the power stage, plus 1 250uf in electrolytic before a choke. that amp will put 2X4W into speakers all day. the 6dj8 is specced to put out 1W MAX, im sure in preamp mode its WAY less. if it dosnt work i can allways put the electrolytic back. im pretty sure it will work though.

with my millet, i built with bypassed electrolytics first and then removed them. i prefered the no-film variant. by a decent margin.

Anyway, got a question for you guys. I normaly use soniccraft for my capacitors because they have basically everything. I just talked to them again however and they said that he may not have the 1uf auricaps - the most important caps. He said he will call me back later to verify.

So, anyone know where to source 200v auricaps in the United States?

8x AURICAP- 62036 1.0 200v .66"D x .78"L $12.22 $9.50
2x BLKGATE- 60089 NX 1000 25v 16 x 24 $18.50 $12.50
1x BLKGATE- 60224 Std 100 160v 16 x 36 $19.95 $13.50
1xBLKGATE- 60087 Std 2200 16v 18 x 36 $11.50 $7.95

Those should all be easy to replace as they are near or at the top of the board. Those capacitors will replace the following in my melos

Auricaps - replace the 4 1.5uf 100v between tubes and 4 ICC yellow caps
Blackgate Nx 1000 - replace 470uf 25v rubycon
Blackgate Standard 100uf 160v - replace the grey 100uf 160v cap about 3 inches above where the 4 auricaps will be
Blackgate Standard 2200uf 16v - replace rubycon dark blue capacitor to far right of the board

Should be here in 5-7 business days, the next fastest shipping was a quarter of the damn order cost...


I still have to replace these caps on my melos however

200v/1000uf - no clue what to replace this beast with
250v/470uf rubycon - again, no clue
2x 16v 6800uf rubycon - will 4700uf 16v Blackgate Standard work or do i need more microfarads?

Why 200V 1uF instead of 200V 2uF or larger voltage 1.5uF for the Auricaps?

I would've gotten FK series instead of Standard 16V 2200uF. I don't think Standard sounds that great. I would go with quality than quantity also so...

This may work but like I said, I don't like Standard.

Are you going to mod this once or upgrade over time? If just once or twice, might as well put the best stuff in once.

Space. 4 of them have to fit stacked in between the tubes unless I want to do serious re-routing with wire. These are the same capacitors Carlo used in Bozebutton's. They already have to be double-stacked and will lean against the tubes

Standard = $7.50 a cap. FK series = $24 per cap

If I did fk series for those, I would have to go 10000uf because they don't have anything else close. Now we're talking $160 a cap. Don't think so.

7.50 to 24 is doable and I would've done that. I didn't recommend doing blackgate for the 6800 one. It is indeed too expensive BUT I wouldn't bother spending $ on standard either. I'd look for something else.

tonight is "no mod night" after the events of yesterday i think i earned it

this is actually a harder task than moding because my mouser parts came. just stuff to replace rusty resistors in the psu. and a new tip for my iron. this is a test of self controll im not sure that i can totally handle... the night is young.

i will say dont skimp much on size for the interstage caps.

i am going to order some lower uf caps for the LV suply. naturally of very high quality.
