The DX90 by iBasso . . . Sound impressions . . . . . . . New Firmware, 2.5.1 . . .

It's definitely the DAC guys. The amp section is great too, but honestly it's the dual Sabre DACs implemented correctly that's giving us the crazy awesomeness. I know this because this is what happened when I put the Concero into my desktop chain for the LCD-2/HE-500. This same kind of awesomeness was brought and I basically threw the Bifrost away. Haha.

Just got it today!

This definitely needs lots of burn in....

impression of 1st hour:

OMG the soundstage.

Treble is a bit extended, bass is not power up yet.

i'm playing it around 190-200, and its loud!

The DX50/PB2 stack is very good, but replacing the DX50 with the DX90 takes the PB2 to another level. The DAC(s) in the DX90 are clearly superior to the one in the DX50. Not that the 50 is bad by any means, the 90 is just better. Everything is so crisp and clear!

Damn - buying the Dx90 is a possibility again

There is something to say about detail/imagery versus musicality. It's like watching a movie with standard stereo sound and then you engage Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 channels surround sound, you tell yourself wow now I am in the movie instead of watching the movie. But then once in a while you like watching this old movie, taking a back seat with simple stereo sound bringing melancholic feelings of a gone era.

Nice analogy.

Damnation again - buying the DX90 is a strong probability again. My finger is hovering over the pre-order button

I appreciate that it's early days, but I find it peculiar that everyone is comparing the DX90 to the DX50, whilst almost no one has even mentioned the DX100 in the equation.

Anyone remember the DX100?

It's that brilliant DAP that is made by iBasso and is based upon a Sabre DAC - desktop version, maybe, but still the same fundamental DAC technology.

I think the simple explantion is that more people own the DX50, so that's what they're comparing it to.

For IEM uses, I like DX90 over DX100.  DX100 can sound quite sterile and even at times emotionless and having hard edges to the notes definition while DX90 is more musical and fluid.

Yup, I sold my DX100 but I might be able to borrow one from a friend for a comparison. From memory, the DX90 beats the DX100 with IEMs, those dual sabres are insane.
