Technics EAH-T700 - An Impressive High-End 2-Way Headphone

If it's executed as well as the Dharma, these may be an excellent closed alternative.  Love the Dharma (which has the dual driver concept with their electret tweeter) which have become my favorite all time headphone.

While I've avoided the Dharma these are not to my taste. Listened to them again in November after a first encounter at IFA, still didn't like them. Treble is overdone and rather harsh -- I really don't see the advantage of multiple drivers, especially in an environment where one is so lucky that a single driver can do it all, avoiding phase shifts, delay problems etc.

Its a pity since the Technics would be quite nice buildwise and has good comfort, despite its weight.

I'm not sure how much they have in common, other than having two drivers per can. The Dharma is crossed over at 8kHz, which means you are hearing both drivers. The Technics EAH-T700 is crossed over at 50kHz, which means you can't even hear the second driver. It seems the extra tweeter may only provide an advantage for younger people, and then only as a means of "feeling" a little more music. Without good bone contact, I'm not sure the tweeter would make any difference. In fact, I think DSD players will roll off the high frequencies because "The DSD process generates noise above 30KHz which can be harmful to speakers and such." (from an AVS post))

Bottom line is that efficacy of sound reproduction above 20 (maybe 25) kHz is hotly debated.

The most piercing treble ever.

Sounds like this one is going to divide a lot of people :-D

Any word on when they will be released in the US?  As with all headphones, I'd want to hear them for myself.  Too many instances of differing opinions to not.

Agreed. 1300 seems a little bit too much anyway. I was expecting somewhere around 750.

I am seeing the equivalent of $830 USD here in Japan, so that $1300 figure is probably wrong, unless they are doing the Luxman thing and charging a huge margin for overseas distributors . . . .   Possible but I seriously doubt it.

Well, if JVC is charging $700+ for their new WOOD 01, I can see these guys charging $800+. Still... no! :)

I must at least mention the new EAH-T700 headphones from Technics ($1199).

Stereophile seems to think the cans are $1199

What's the point of the second driver if it's crossed at 50kHz? Humans can't hear that high. Is this a headphone for dogs? Can they hear that high?

some people believe that supersonic frequencies give us extra positional cues that traditional headphones cant replicate, which is why they never sound true to life.

I don't subscribe to that myself, but I'm still somewhat interested in these now that they're more sensibly priced.

I did give these a brief listen, prepared for the worst. But just found it pretty pleasant sounding with my Mojo rig, was totally expecting horrible treble murdering my ears but just didn't get it.

Can't say much about the sound but the overall build, presentation and comfort is pretty good.

Yeah, I had the same experience listening to it here, out of my AK.  I listened for around one hour and it sounded pretty fantastic to me.  Fit and build is top-notch.  Cable seemed awesome as well.  It was in a noisy shop, and I didn`t headphones with me to do an A-B, so don`t have anything other than a first impressions, but they are 100% positive.

I`m pretty sure I`m getting these.  . . .
