A $1500 2-way headphone in 2015.

I thought we were done with this crap in the 70s.

Don't forget to add the Dharma thing into that comment :)

Check out this quad, mulit-driver Toshiba I found in an audio shop here in Tokyo :

I`m going to try to demo the new technics T700 today.  Whether good or bad will definitely hinge on the cohesiveness of the sound.

Regarding the high price, the initial list price here is ¥97k, which will translate into approx. ¥90k retail, and then around ¥75k as a stable price in a month or two (much higher than Sony Z7).

Recently Panasonic re-rolled out the Technics brand with some very expensive home audio components here in Japan, really trying to take on Luxman, Accuphase, etc.  By that standard, this new Technics headphone is relatively cheap; I wouldn`t be surprised to see a more expensive sibling `phone released some time in the future.  They`re calling this the `700`, which makes me wonder if this is the HD700 rival, with an HD800 rival in the works . . .  I`m speculating.

Anyway, any quality addition to the closed headphone world is welcome.

A pair of RP-DJ1200 Technic headphones were my gateway drug into heaf-fi, so im very interested what technics can bring to the fight. Given advent of new flagships left and right from many companies new and old, it will be interesting in the least to see how this plays out.

I guess the Technics EAH-T700 are finally out now at CES 2016 in final, non-prototype form. Not sure if shipping yet, though.

Tyll mentioned at the end of his Day 2 CES report that they should retail for around $1300.

That seems a little pricey, since they use the same main driver that is used in Panasonic's under-$200 RP-HD10-K.

What's the point of the second driver if it's crossed at 50kHz? Humans can't hear that high. Is this a headphone for dogs? Can they hear that high?

If it's executed as well as the Dharma, these may be an excellent closed alternative.  Love the Dharma (which has the dual driver concept with their electret tweeter) which have become my favorite all time headphone.
