Sennheiser Momentum On-Ear Impressions

Sennheiser only showcases four variations, but apparently some dealers, including Crutchfield, have a fifth: brown. I like my pistachio, though my kids told me to get blue, but in case you're not into pastels...

We've actually launched 3 new colors for the MOMENTUM On-Ear at IFA 2013 - high-gloss black, classic brown and intense red.

Here's the press release:

Essential Style: The new Sennheiser MOMENTUM On-Ear in black, brown and red brings performance and sleek, understated beauty
Sennheiser goes minimal with new MOMENTUM On-Ear colors. At IFA in Berlin, the audio specialist introduced three new versions of its MOMENTUM On-Ear. Now available in high-gloss black, classic brown and intense red, the new headphones revisit the stylish, minimalist urban look of Sennheiser's acclaimed MOMENTUM, delivering a combination of pure, clean aesthetics and high performance in a compact on-ear design.
The MOMENTUM On-Ear headphones [http://en-us.sennheiser.com/momentum-on-ear] are the perfect fusion of style and substance; delivering great performance, crafted from the finest materials and featuring a sleek, understated look. The first four MOMENTUM On-Ear versions launched this summer in a burst of color – a celebration in fresh, energizing tones. "With the three new color versions, Sennheiser has re-imagined this essential, cool design in richer, more subtle tones," saidCharles Cha, Product Manager at Sennheiser. "Where the MOMENTUM On-Ear headphones first showed their playful and extroverted character, the new versions are a more discrete revelation of luxury that hints at their superb performance."

High quality materials, high-end design, high performance
The MOMENTUM On-Ear headphones' great looks reflect both its clean, minimalist design and the tangibly high quality materials and workmanship. The ear pads and headband have been finished in Alcantara®, a high-tech material produced in Italy. Alcantara's® unique combination of suppleness, durability and breathable finish makes it highly valued in fashion, interior design, and automotive applications. Here, it provides the listener with the ultimate in comfort, even for long periods of listening enjoyment. The headband of the MOMENTUM On-Ear is made of premium brushed stainless steel. They are the perfect choice for those who demand top quality and don't want to compromise in any aspect.

Similarly, no compromises have been made on sound quality. Powered by Sennheiser's proprietary 18-ohm transducers, the MOMENTUM On-Ear serves up a full stereo sound in a frequency range from 16 to 22,000 Hz, delivering incredible clarity and detail with a slight bass emphasis. The closed, on-ear design ensures reliable isolation from external noise for a great listening experience on the move – even in noisy urban environments.

In control, on the go
The MOMENTUM On-Ear headphones feature a single-sided detachable cable with convenient in-line remote and microphone for Apple iDevices, for easy control of music playback and to make and receive calls on the go. The three new variants of the MOMENTUM On-Ear in high-gloss black, classic brown and intense red are available at selected retailers from autumn 2013. I have this feeling these are the headphones to be compared with. The sound quality is very very good. The bass thing is interesting, if I understand right.. this is like Sennheiser style "bass".. i.e. it doesn't hurt your ears, and basically you can listen to any music at any volume then put them down and don't feel anything strange (I am sure if you do that you with really low quality headphones or really good quality ones you will feel some kind of effect in your ears), and that's the fun part, even when you listen you do whatever you want and it doesn't affect, so that explains the part why they did it different.. and why "testing" this just by sitting somewhere in lab just doesn't make any sense.. (you don't actually try hard to "listen" every detail if you do smth else)..
But, is there a better headphone? If you all are trying this and really liking or not means there are not a lot of headphones better than this right?
I hope they become really popular, especially with apple products.. and next step would be having really better headphone, whatever company makes it.
I think there is no way not to like this headphones.. but if you expected more.. from on-ear headphones.. let's hope soon it will come.. I'm ok with these ones for now..

I'm currently selling mine. Soundwise those were underwhelming for me.
I like some bass emphasis but for a lot of my music the emphasis of those cans was a good bit too much.
EQ down helped a bit but still they could not compete it the other areas with my 100$ in-ears. (phonak pfe 112)

If sound quality is your top priority those are not worth the 200$ price tag. Besides sound quality those are great looking
and very well constructed. Their looks kinda seduced me to be an early adapoter.

Amazon hardly even sells those and some company does, for 170$.. for that price even if they sounded same I would still prefer momentum on-ears cause they are Sennheiser and are comfortable... but are you sure they sound *better*?
If somebody says particular headphones (with comparable price) sound really better than MOEs than I am willing get them and return back ones I like least, and update here if I return back Momentum on-ears )

Btw, here is a Sennheiser himself explaining everything..

Perhaps try a Sennheier Amperior at the current clearance prices.

Lach you seem to like the Amperiors a lot. Sorry for the off topic question but do you prefer the Amperiors over the original full size Momentums? My impression is that I have read from you great things about the originals but at the same time you don't stop suggesting the Amperiors. Which one wins the battle after all?

See... I think that was what I saw in Apple Store a year ago.. it was attached to an iphone 3gs in the end of the store.. and I usually if I were at Apple Store would try all headphones and would have no idea why some of them were so expensive since they sounded as bad.. it had weird type of cord right? So I was like woah sounds fine I like it, somebody even came to say they are closing the store I was listening for so long, I was like I need to buy this how much they will be, he said "100-200" probably, and I thought it should be muuuch cheaper than that, went upstairs, trying to quickly explain other employee what headphones I was listening downstairs, in the end he says "Sennheisers?", and he shows the blue box.. and I see the price tag...
I don't know how to describe it.. I thought they are some really cheap blue headphones that sounded alright and would be ok to use with mobile phone..
yes, totally worth to get them with special price, but still they are not better than momentum on-ears, they look great, they feel nice, look at what Sennheiser himself did to them in the interview (imagine if it would gone wrong), so they are super durable, which I am really looking for. Soundwise I don't either of them is better than the other(though it's nicer to listen to amperiors), so I would prefer momentums.

Also, volume is really low on mobile phone, but it's fine

He suggested cause I asked about headphones about same price as momentum on-ears that sound good. Original Momentums are now much more expensive and not on-ears

Don't think there's a big price difference ibetween the 2 Momentums versions, especially f you keep your eyes peeled for a good offer of a ''bigger sized'' refurbished pair. At least the difference is not that significant to put you off from picking the full sized ones IMO.

Besides, despite the fact the Amperiors are officially discontinued, they are still more or less in the same price tag along with the full size Momentums. Lach has also suggested me to get the Amperiors over the (small) on ear Momentums and I was just wondering if he will do the same with the full sized ones. I know he owns both Momentum versions.

That would be really strange if you want momentum and would be able to find it price close to on ear ones or amperiors and choose not to get them..
Reason at least for me to get amperior or on ear momentum is because they are both more "portable" and cheaper than full momentums, if its not an issue for you than why not get full momentums and enjoy them? I can only imagine how good they sound if they are better than smaller momentums

Haha I don't really tend to believe in any headphone 'winning' or 'losing'. If I was looking for absolute bass precision and tightness, I'd go for the Amperior. But if I was looking for a mellower can that I could relax overall with, the Momentum takes the cake. It's also an extremely comfortable headphone and I value that a lot.

However overall I tend to listen to the Amperior more just because a) it works with the kind of music I've been listening to lately b) I am more confident in its durability.

In this case though as vaheg says I keep suggesting the Amperior because at the current clearance prices it costs similar or less to the Momentum On-Ear and I believe it delivers a more articulate sound and better durability / build quality.

All good points vaheg - the build on the Amperior is not initially very impressive compared to the Momentum On-Ear. However, here's what you should know: the Amperior is based on a 25 year old design, the HD25, which is has become an extremely popular headphone for DJ's because of a reputation for being virtually indestructible. DJ's put a great emphasis on durability because they need their headphones to make a living and handle them comparatively roughly. They get taken on and off constantly, packed away with other equipment, the cord gets yanked, etc etc. I've spoken with DJ's who confirmed that the HD25 is a bit of a legend.

Even if the Amperior breaks, every single part of the headphone is replaceable with parts from the HD25. (Except the driver cups themselves, which I would feel are unlikely to break because they are milled from a single piece of aluminium and not plastic like the Momentum On-Ear).

So while I'm sure the Momentum On-Ear is a durable headphone, the HD25 has a tried and tested design :)

As for the sound between the two, that is more of a preference thing. I think the Amperior has a smaller soundstage than the On-Ear but much tighter bass control and overall a sound that is more precise and balanced. The On-Ear might be more impressive on first listen but I really have issues with the way it presents bass. Again though this is a personal thing.

For around the same price I also think the V-Moda M80 is very good if you like a smoother sound, and the Audio Technica ATH-ES700 is an incredible performer as well and a nicely balanced all rounder compared to all these other headphones. Unfortunately it isn't quite as comfortable.

Different gears are mean for different music, I myself tend to use Bose to listen to Classical music, because Sennheiser, Akg, audio technica and grados are mostly tuned for rock n roll music back then and that time only Bose stand for Classical, but its a personal preference, I use the Momentum over-ear for all kind of music because it sounds really good

Based on suggestions here, I just tried the V-Moda M80 and I did not like them at all, especially compared to the Momentum On Ear. I also just bought the Momentum full - again - and I love the sound, definitely a step up above the On Ear, but I'm grappling with the discomfort. The pads are super soft, but they don't place well on my ears. I take them off after an hour and it's such a relief! I tried Bose again as recently as last year. I had previously owned the first two generations of the QC headphones. I never enjoyed them for classical. I prefer the HD598 for classical. I'm leaning towards the Momentum On Ear for portables including walking around the house and watching movies with my Sony goggles, and the HD598 for home relaxing in my Lazboy. Except for classical, I think I prefer the Momentum full over the HD598. Maybe I just need to find a larger more comfortable close pair for non-classical music.
