Sennheiser HDVD800 Headphone Amplifier

The WA7 was thin with the HD800 when I had it, even with the upgraded EH tubes.  Din't have it for long.  Do want a longer audition with the HDVD800 through the balanced output though.  Initial thought was that it was impressive.

They are two totally different amps.

I owned both and sold the wa 7. Even with the best tubes it pails in comparison.
In looks the fire fly is Stella. But sound the HDVD 800 as amp is top shelf. As DAC combo it's avg and a little thin.
But EQ can help.

I have HDVD 800 and like many here occasionally like to experiment.  While I am satisfied with my HD 800s I notice that AKG 702s are now made in China and are cheaper.  Has anybody tried 701 or 702 with HDVD 800?  How about Creek OBH-11?

I really love my Senns, just feel like slumming a bit.

I own Q701s and HD650s but not as stark a difference as comparing with HD800s.
Variety can be a good thing and draw out renewed appreciation for differences of your favorite headphones--

I'm quite sure you would ditch the Q701 if you get the HD800. The HD650 IMO does enough to be kept alongside the HD800, but I can understand people who doesn't mind the comfort factor of Audez'es would trade the HD650 for the planars.

It's more of a matter of how different they are than how much better is one to the other. The HD650 is so different to the HD800 that it IMO justifies having both. The HD800 IMO does everything better than the Q701, and the sound sig is quite similar that it does not make sense keeping both.

I have the Q701s and have tried them with my HDVD 800. The amp makes a marked improvement in the sound, and to my mind, I would wonder whether in a blind test I would reliably hear an improvement in using the HD 800s over the AKG Q701s. Probably would, but not sure... Anyway no night-and-day shortfall of the Q701 vs the HD 800 on that amp.

I have never heard HD650s.  I went straight from HD600s to HD800s.  Didn't bother with the in between because I figured I would eventually want to go all the way, so why bother with spending money at the halfway point, just go all the way and save the halfway cost.  I am basically satisfied with my HD800 and HDVD800 setup but was just thinking of experimenting with other cans that had a decent reputation.  Maybe someday I will try LCD3.  How do they sound with HDVD 800?  Anybody know?

When I do enough listening with my present setup I plan to post my experiences and thoughts here, but until then I am still in the assessment stage.  Sometimes it seems my Creek OBH-11 has better base, but then maybe I was only being influenced by some bass boost, or more output in the mid-bass.

I'm still listening.

I also went straight ahead from the Q701 to the HD800, but because now I wanted a headphone with dark sound signature (and the Audez'es are too heavy for me) I get the HD650.

is the main difference between HDVD800 and HDVD600 that 800 has a DAC function?  Can the 800 be run as just an amp without using the DAC?  Thanks.

You can bypass the internal DAC of HDVD800 by connecting your external DAC through the HDVD800 analogue inputs.
