Let’s wait and see because it could be bad naming on Sennheisers part, instead of being a “mid-fi” HD6X0 product it might actually be a completely different beast. Since they removed the HD700 there has been a huge gap between 600/650 and 800 for years.
In my opinion we need something to fill that gap and I’m still hopeful for a HD900 because there hasn’t been a new flagship since 2009.
Now I could just be talking crap but don’t let the model name determine the price it should be sold for, it looks like they went to a lot more effort to make a better 600 line headphone than they did to with 660S. Listen with your ears and not your eyes.
Basically the only complaint I have about the 660S is the lack of bass presence below 80 Hz. The bass quality however is good, and the staging/imaging is nearly perfect for my preferences. So I’m really looking forward to this update if they can improve the bass, and maybe add a tiny bit more detail in the treble.
I like both the HD 660 S and HD 600 quite a bit. But I also dislike the HD 650 even when well driven. I have noticed Sennheisers often struggle with the bass whether in quality or quantity. Just something about the HD 650's entire presentation puts me off, not just the bass. I am getting the feeling the HD 660S2 will have notably better bass quality than the HD 650 and may be the first HD 6xx series headphone with both good bass quantity and good quality bass.

650 is no specialist headphones, but what is does it does super well.
Lana del rey, Kylie minogue - Chocolate or anything with vocals comes to mind.
Rock, edm, classic or anything technical is not its specialty.

Depends on the setup i would argue.
With clean sounding amp hd650 gonna sound more pleasant while hd600 gonna sound too aggresive in mids, but come alive with warm amp or tube amp.

Well that and personal preference. I know systems can make a big difference and can make or break some headphones but sometimes you just prefer one headphone's presentation regardless. I generally preferred the HD 600 on every system I tried them on over the HD 650, I just like how the HD 600 presents mids in general more even if they are more aggressive.
