I think it was time for them to change completely their high end rather than make another evolution. Their last 3 generations of top of the line dynamic headphones (580/ 600/ 650) were on the same base.

Just to reinforce the claims made by a few people here I can also confirm that Sennheiser is going to release a new dynamic headphone called "HD800". Two days ago I wrote a contact mail to the German Sennheiser sales department and I just received a call from one of their employees today confirming what seemed like yet another rumor.
Their representative told to me that it'll be released in January 2009. The presentation is going to be held in the USA and the HD800 will initially be priced at around 1000€ (~$1300). He was not ready to give more information on the technical specifications and the changes made in regards to sound signature.

So, anyway, I suppose this is great news! I for one am really looking forward to it since the pricing and the model number suggest that there must have been some significant improvements.

HD = Headphone Dynamic
HE = Headphone Electrostatic

No further information. I'm afraid we'll just have to wait.

The detachable cable system were one of the many reasons the HD580/600/650 were so popular. I hope they don't go changing it.
