New Flagship from Audio-Technica: ATH-W3000ANV, 50th Anniversary Headphones

I'd love to see how these headphones measure out of low (~0-ohm) vs. high (>120-ohm) jacks.

My guess is that the FR graphs would differ greatly.

Typically vintage amps and receivers (60's and 70's at minimum) have headphone out impedances between 150-400 ohms. Since the headphone outs were wired to the main power amp section, they had to drop the power. That said, I don't fine the FR response of the W3000ANV to be radically different on my vintage receivers and their high impedance outs than I do with my Leben (which is output transformer coupled and has a low output impedance).

I never really cared about the output impedance with any of my vintage gear. But my marantz 2325 can power my he6 easily out of the headphone jack while being very quiet with my w3000anv(that's quiet a feat), There is are also zero hiss with my 60s tube fisher integrated. But that's a transformer coupled tube amp as well and can't do anything with my he6 out of the headphone out. But I love the sound of vintage gear so much, I have an amp/receiver mated specifically to each headphone I own. Being vintage allows me to afford that.

In my experience, the lower the impedance load of the headphone, the greater the effect of the headphone jack output impedance. "Preference" or "not minding" the result is another matter. *shrug*

Yeah that's true, but the reason I don't care much is because vintage gear can be had so cheap. Case in point is my sansui au-517. I only paid 225-250.00(I think), but It's better than every dedicated headphone amp I've listened to under 1200.00. The headphone out has way too much gain for my jh13. They even hiss with an 75ohm adapter. My w3000 hiss a little, but still noticeable. The reason I don't care much is that it sounds fabulous with most everything else, and I would have to spend at least 5-6 times more to get better sound. So that afford me the ability to experiment with a few vintage pieces until I find the right match.

Also fortunately for me I have a friend who has owned a multitude of 2-3000.00 amps, so I can't take one of my amps over his place and directly compare. It's really just confirmation on how good my own setup is.

Anyone can recommend a good headamp with preamp section to drive the W3000ANV??
Budget below USD1.5k

The Woo Audio WA2 looks gorgeous but spec wise it is not as excellent as the WA6SE for the W3000ANV it seems.

Eventhought I don't have such expensive amp myself (yet), there are few widely recommended. Considering that Zana Deux SE is way above your budget, I would say Svetlana 2 would be perfect match for W3000ANV - on the edge of your budget with pre-amp function. When I get enough money, that's my next bigger purchase. But if you have some time, you can search through this thread to find some discussion about W3000ANV + WA2, I think there was one guy who has both and reported there is no background noise.

At that price I would look at the Rudistor RPX-35. You can get it from Amazon right now for $1,290. I used to own the RPX-33 MkII (previous generation) and it is a great sounding amp IMO. It is in the warm side for a solid state amp. It has pre-amp ouput and dual mono construction.

Violectric V200 i use when not using Zana Deux, works very well with them imo.

I agree. The V200 is really nice (I have one) but he asked for a headphone amp with pre-amp capabilities and the V200 does not have it.

Wow you guys really know how to make me max out my budget

Yup I needed a pre out so Zana Deux SE and V200 don't make the cut.

I have read that comment on W3000ANV + WA2 and it was reported that they aren't a spectacular match. Woo Audio confirmed with me regarding that as well.

Both the Svetlana 2 and Rudistore RPX-35 look good. From the website it seems that W3000ANV was used in designing the Svetlana 2. For the Rudistore, I am not sure.

I am nitpicking because I could get much more if I were to separate my headamp from a preamp. However, there is limited space in my bedroom so I will need to collapse them as one.

Will pull the trigger next month so I want to make sure that I don't squander the money and that the amp will do justice to the W3000ANV. It is the last headphone I will ever want to sell away

Doesn't the ZD SE have a preout? Mine did, but perhaps it was a custom.

I'd agree that the Woos (WA6 and WA2 at least) weren't spectacular with the W3000s, for whatever reason. The ZD is -- really supercharges these phones and is the best amp I've heard with them, including some more expensive and highly-regarded units. That being said, during our move I had great success using the W3000s with very modest amps, and they really do seem to get the best out of whatever is driving them. The little Bellari HP amp with a decent tube is a terrific combination, IMO, with some of the qualities of the ZD at a silly price. The Carys also work well, as HP amp and preamps, as did a vintage McIntosh integrated I had a chance to listen to a while back.

And I know it can sometimes be heresy on these boards to talk up the Benchmark products, but I was also really impressed with the W3000/DAC1 HDR combo. A fine-sounding and flexible combo with a good built-in pre.
