Has anyone tried these with HD650's?

I tried putting mine on low gain and wow - it sounds much better. This is strange, maybe my headphones just respond much better? They are denon D2000. This is a little annoying as i've been runing high gain since I got this amp and never tried low gain. But a free upgrade at the same time, so i can't complain lol.

Any explanation?

edit: also, even in low gain mode, it does not seem to effect the volume much, either way I can't pass 12'o clock before it gets to loud.

I hate to say this, but I have never bothered to try high gain. Low gain was enough gain for anything I wanted to drive.

See post in this thread: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/6205200-post114.html

And my post in another thread for a $700 Solo SRG amp: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/6266656-post14.html

I don't have a lot to add to that because I keep my HD800 down in the basement with my bigger amps, and with my disability I don't often bring them upstairs to listen. I do think the EF-5 with my Mullard long plate tube would be a good match for the HD800, but I worry that will be wrong for the HE-5.

x2, particularly in comparison to the EF1 with the 650s

EF5 with a Mullard long plate 12AU7 is pretty nice with the HD800, where the stock tubes was a little bright. I don't like the Mullard tube as much with the HE-5 as it tames them a bit too much, but it does warm up the mids nicely. I need to dig out the HD600 and try them some more, but I put the stock EF5 tube back in for the HE-5 for now since I use the HD800 with my ZDT amp.

I have tried EF5 with HE5, GS1000 and HD600. I think they are really good for its price. I think they have enough power and swing and can make HD600 sing. Compared to Raptor, they aren't that behind. So for its price, I think it is awesome amp.

After reading all 11 pages, it sounds as if the EF5 would be compatible with pretty much all impedences. I'm looking for a tube or hybrid, $400 or less, that would sound good with DT880/600, RS1i, and AH-D5000...if there is such an amp. Is this the one to drive 25 - 600Ohm?

+1
Anyone? Tube rolling experiences would be welcome as well!

I have used the HD580 with the EF5 and they have a very coherent sound. Bass is tight, nice top extension, and wide/deep soundstage. Overall I would say it is a very nice combo.

The only tube I have rolled is a TungSol 12AU7 which is bit mellower than the stock tube.

I ordered the EF-5 a week ago, and I am waiting excitedly! For anyone who has received theirs, how long did it take to arrive? Thanks.
