I mentioned my tube rolling experience it another thread:
For me the best was Telefunken (1960's)
followed by the following three different tubes:
Amprex (1960's) - very balanced
RCA Cleartop - nice - clear and crisp
Sylvania - Military grade - could not get a sound sig - but very good too ( a keeper)

I in an earlier thread that you mention 12AT7 worked in the EF5. Did you notice the difference in the gain? I've been wanting to try a 12BH7 and 12AT7 tubes.

We have very similar taste but I would also add Mullard there. But indeed, Telefunken, Amprex, Sylvania and RCA are all good tubes with EF1, EF5 (and even on Raptor).

Hey guys, an update...

I just did a direct comparison back and forth between the RCA clear top which came with the amp and the Tung Sol black glass. I listened to the tung sol for about over 1 week, and wanted to retry the RCA, and to me surprise they IMO gel better with the HE-5's... The Tung Sol went out of my amp, they just did not have that added clarity and spaciousness, which seem more of a tamed RCA. Though I think this is more personal preference, though I did enjoy the black glass lots, I just feel in love with the original sound again... So I switched back... I have a question to all you 12AU7 owners, which tube has better clarity and top end extension than the RCA clear top? Since I love the sound sig of dazzling highs, which the tung sol did have solid highs, but not rca like... thanks,

Take care!

Telefunken in my opinion. They have all the clarity, detail and top end extension that you talk about.

I think I may try out a pair of AD797BRZ on a Browndog SOIC Adapter. I'll update this thread when i try it out.

There is a voltage selection switch on the back panel for 110v/220v selection. We set it as 220v default. If your power voltage is 110v, please switch to 110v after you received the amp.

If the amp requires setup I'd suggest you include a simple single page with instructions or setup directions in the manual if you include one with your amp already.

I've got some SOIC-8 to DIP Adapters on the way, and a pair of AD797 BRZ as well as a pair of AD825's to try out. Should be fun.

I just tried a a couple of new tubes!

12au7 Amperex Bugle Boy (Holland) -- This is the early version with the cartoon, ribbed plates and O-getter. This is my new favorite next to the Mullard CV4003. It's not as warm and bass-y as the Mullard but retains good tight bass. The magic lies in it's mids, this tube really makes them pop, very lively and works well for vocal pieces.

12bh7 Sylvania -- Sounds very much like the stock RCA Clear Top maybe with more detail. Bright, exciting, and fast with a emphasis on treble extension and detail.

12bh7 RCA long gray plates -- Very well balanced tube with a neutral sound. A little laid back kinda like the Sylvania 12au7

Next gonna try some 12AT7 's and Telefunkens! Still trying to find a Tung Sol black glass at a reasonable price.

I just rolled a pair of 825's on a browndog in today. Initial impressions are very positive. This amp really responds to different op-amps. I have not listened to it enough to form a real opinion but im quite impressed thus far. I have not tried the 797's yet, I just got finished soldering them up though.

The OP275 was a popular op-amp in the 90's. But I think it's long been surpassed and there stands alot to be gained by swapping it out with something a little nicer.

Another nice benefit to these SOIC on browndog op-amps is they are very small and can easily fit under the lid without having to use washers to raise the top. They are actually smaller then a single dip-8 opamp.

edit: ok spent some more time listening to 825, still have not tried 797. This is easily the best op-amp i've tried in this amp yet. Clearly surpassing the PA2227, LME49860, OP275 and AD743JN. If you leave this op-amp stock your really missing out on what the EF5 can deliver. Im listening with the RCA Cleartop too btw. Different op-amps do synergize differently with various tubes so this comes into play as well.

Edit: been listening to the AD797's for awhile. They are very neutral sounding and clear, I think they are a step over the 825 as well. And that is saying alot, as the 825 was easily better then the above mentioned opamps. There's simply nothing to not like about the 797, it seems to do everything very well. When first putting it in, coming from the 825 it really shows how not-neutral the 825 is. That said, the 825 is still great, and very fun/musical sounding. It's a real toe tapper, if not the last word in neutrality. For those of you still using the stock op275 it's really time to roll that badboy, your missing out.

The 825's are available at Digikey for 4.23 each, the 797's are 9.45 a piece. You need 2 of these as they are single channel. You'll also need browndog 2xSOIC8 to DIP8 adapters, which are 2.39 each, with a 5 min order.

Just got my Tung Sol black glass in and and loving it. Very well balanced and detailed, I think I have a new favorite and it rounds out my tube collection nicely.

Tung Sol BG - best all arounder
Amperex Bugle Boy - great for midrange
Mullard CV4003 - good warmth and bass
12BH7 Sylvanias - Nice bright, highs, fast, exciting.

Am using my EF5 with the HE-5 and HD650 's. Bought in the UK from here: AmpCity - The UK's headphone amp specialists - Home page . Didnt realise they had a UK dealer until i looked on the head direct site lol...

In any case, I'm having good fun rolling tubes, the RCA cleartop is my favourite thus far, though I'm having a hard time locating tubes in the UK. Anyone in the UK know where to get them from?
