I disagree with the comments re Spotify and what not, and 'crappy' Android DAPs, the ZX2 is hardly what I call crappy, and if FiiO can pull off something similar for less money, they'll have a winning device for sure
Lots of talk of Micro SD on this thread. On a player this size, why not use SD, they are cheaper and available in lager capacity. Or, even better M.2 SSD, theres a thought.
I have cameras that do video and audio as small as a DAP and use SD. They also have to fit in image sensors and lenses.
If you want to appeal to more than fan boys, (and get X5 owners to upgrade) you need to differentiate from every other DAP out there... Larger storage might lure a few from their ageing iPod classics too.
Haven't been on the thread for a while, just had a few e-mail digests debating larger internal memory and one Micro SD. I vote for two, at least they will get larger and cheaper over time.

I used to use OTG memory on my X5. But these days if I need more storage I just attach a DAC to my MacBook Air 11" or Galaxy Tab S 8.4. Better display than a DAP too
Looking for an all in one solution with no dongles. I.e great display / UI, capable of large internal memory, can run Spoitfy, Deezer, Tidal.

That's why I said the merry-go-round. It's been discussed and discussed and discussed.
I don't mean to single anyone out and I understand that you're late to the party but most of this thread is about, and comes around to the same topic. It's been beaten to death and FiiO is not changing from mSD.
I agree SD would be better, or two mSD. Nothing to be done about it now. It will not change.
Eactly. I have unlimited data and stream spotify premium all day and HQ Youtube music. This would go nicely with all my gear as well. Not everyone one listens to classical music or high res DSD stuff. So I agree you with you, good point
You get around 126 kbit/s AAC - not bad but also far from anything audiophile.
I don't like it much but streaming is the future. I mean, show a younger person a CD and they look at it as 20 years ago someone would look at you with an LP. However, since record player have a kind of a resurgence....maybe there is hope....
Streaming is indeed absolutely great for exploring new music and bands.
The problem is not the quality from a listeners point of view, I think the more discerning user will expect more. If you listen to a badly encoded medium or attenuated signal on a stream it becomes more apparent on higher quality playback equipment. If the streaming device is equalised in a such a way then the chances are that it will be enough to mask any flaws by exaggerating any bass or mid range and rolling off some treble to make some other frequencies more clear.
Streaming data from a home network is a totally different kettle of fish, on a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device where you determine the quota of data broadcast to your device. That is something I would need to investigate further besides the usual security risks.
I'll also read that article; don't want egg of my face again.
It is actually usually around 256 kbit/s for 1080p videos, as you can see if you use a proper downloader like the Complete YouTube Saver add-on for Firefox or certain standalone downloaders.
If you only get an audio stream with a bitrate around 128 kbit/s, your browser and/or downloader can't handle DASH properly.

I think as times moving on, especially in the portable audio scene the definition of audiophile is slowly changing. To my understanding, an audiophile was someone who's definitely passionate about sound quality but attempting to replicate the experience of a live concert through a home stereo. With the likes of portable audio and its huge popularity, the meaning is carving its own new way.
I would say an audiophile is someone who loves high audio quality, not necessarily high musical quality, allthough that's not excluded either. And since high audio quality is dependent on technical preconditions...
