A list of improvements, which all go to show what a good player the original X5 is.

There are also some areas where the 2nd gen has taken a backward step:-

Combined LO/Digital Out
Reported issues with OTG
Analogue volume control (although listed as an improvement) adds another component (increasing distortion) in the output stage.

Overall, it would appear a worthy successor, but from comments so far I don't think I'll be rushing to sell my original.

I would be interested to hear from the reviewers their impressions of the new firmware and what improvements have been made in that area.

Agree on the combined coax/Line out

OTG was always touch and go.

Analogue volume to enable hardware DSD decoding. I have no issues with this and it doesn't mean it'll sound bad. the THD+N looks good <0.001%(1 kHz, PO ). Many are reporting they prefer the output quality.

Basically I linked to the FiiO site the same info I posted in the first post. I'm not sure if it'll be worth it but I'll be testing one on the tour so I'll know then and report my findings.

What FW are you referring to?

Yes, cards are interchangeable between old and new X5. I've been swapping cards between my old X5 and tour new X5 with no problems :)

Thanks. Next in line for European tour unit :)

I've not had any problems with OTG with my X5 apart from an increased battery drain.

By firmware I'm referring to the 2nd Gen GUI and general usability. I know this will be subjective, but there have been no comments so far as to whether it is better, worse or similar to original. All I know is it has 5 top-level choices instead of 7.
Edit: the specs from the post above show a digital pot for volume control

X5ii FW is basically the same as X1 and X3ii and is very similar to original X5 FW. I do wish the EQ wasn't buried in the Play Settings menu and hope Fiio changes that in the future - hint, hint, nudge, nudge...

Hmmm might be the best if it's accessible via the now playing menu..

I haven't played with X1 and X3II (only X3 and X5), but I understand that X1 is customizable, so hopefully X3II and X5II will be also.
Agreed - EQ should be accessible from quick settings - should be possible via FW update...
