I heard Fostex is making the DX000 line under a new name.
If this is true, I'm grabbing up a 7000.
Yes. It is the TH900

D7100: the $1200 fart cannon.

Where did you hear that?
Had: AKG Q701, Audeze LCD2, Beyer DT990/T1, Denon D2k/7k, HifiMan HE500, Sen HD650, Sony XB700/1000/V700DJ, Ultrasone Pro900/2900/Signature Pro : Music Hall Dac25.3, Nuforce Icon HDP, WooAudio WA6
I see you've owned A LOT of headphones... Could you please tell me a bit about your opinion on Audeze LCD2, AKG Q701, Beyer DT990, HifiMan HE500 and Sen HD650? I am mainly interested in a level of detail they can offer, not that much in frequency response differences (but you can elaborate on it as well). Some comparison among those would be nice
thats a fairly massive request
thats a fairly massive request
it is quite a request so I'll keep it brief/subjective to my tastes.. I added the T1/ D7000/ Signature Pro as a reference to broaden the comparison.
to note: I like warmer/smooth treble signature, deep impactful bass, and comfort is very important (I prefer velour to leather pads)
Bass: D7000>LCD2>Signature Pro=T1>HD650>DT990>HE500>Q701
- IMO the D7000s have the best bass in terms of musical enjoyment
Treble: Q701>LCD2>Signature Pro>D7000>T1>HE500>HD650>DT990
- The Q701 surprisingly had excellent smooth and controlled yet natural treble/ I really liked the reproduction. The LCD2s slightly too warm. The D7000s slightly sibilant.
Midrange: LCD2>Signature Pro>T1>Q701=HE500>D7000>HD650>DT990
- LCD2's and HE500s and known for their midrange, I preferred the LCD2s.
Comfort: D7000>HD650>T1>Q701>Signature Pro>DT990>HE500>LCD2
- D7000s are barely there, HD650s clamp a bit but the velour pads are great, the LCD2s are terribly uncomfortable for long listening.
Build Quality: Signature Pro>T1=DT990>HD650>D7000>LCD2>Q701>HE500
- I had a lot of build issues with my HE500s on the other side the DT990s/T1 were build like a tank.
Overall: D7000>Signature Pro>T1>LCD2>Q701>HD650>HE500>DT990
* this is the order in which I would buy these headphones the D7000 being my first choice (if $ was not much of a concern)...
- D7000s have always been my favorite go to headphone before the TH900s I currently own, the Q701s are a great value though. I didn't like the HE500 at all neither in terms of build or musicality. The HD650s sound a little too warm - even for my taste - especially when comparing them to the T1/Signature Pro/ D7000 which have better micro detail retrieval and a sharper treble character. On the other side the DT990s treble has a great deal of sibilance - overly sharp/cold treble character which was not to my liking. Hope this helps.
I am sure some will disagree but music/listening/enjoyment are quite personal and this is how I personally felt about these phones, feel free to ask more "specific" questions about my comments if you like.
That's a FANTASTIC post man! I am very grateful WE HAVE QUITE THE SAME PREFERENCES (more smooth treble, quality tight bass and high level of comfort) so that makes your opinion even more useful for me!
Honestly, if I am going to purchase some other headphones in the future, they need to pass there requirements:
1) Are of impedance up to 300 ohms
2) Are as comfortable as D7000 (for very long listening sessions)
3) Are full-size (open/closed doesn't matter)
4) Are neutral (or quite easy to neutralise by EQing)
5) Are affordable (not +1500$) but still better mainly in a level of detail they offer in comparison with D7000
- So LCD-2 are not very comfortable? If not, they are a definite no-go for me! I need to be able to listen for hours and still feel comfortable (as I do with D7000).
- And Q701 doesn't have a good bass? I listen mainly to rock and metal or even some pop with electronic elements and I like how D7000's bass drives it all (I do not EQ the bass in any way). I would only thing about some headphones with a good tight bass (but it doesn't have to be equally good to D7000's)
What about HD650 vs D7000 - which ones offer higher level of detail? I quite like them as they are neutral, full-size, comfortable (not only from your reference), up to 300 ohms and are affordable But don't know if I can get anything with them if I already have D7000 (neutralised).
