Changes at Beyerdynamic

Anyone have any more updates on the release date for these new cans? I've been really interested in getting a pair of 770pros for a long time except for two concerns:

1) Popular opinion that the highs aren't as extended or refined as could be, and

2) Possible comfort problems for those with, ahem, big craniums.

Looks like the new 880s might be the ticket, but I want a pair nownownow! (well, maybe after someone reviews them first and confirms that they are the uber-Beyer!).

The DT770 has "airy" highs that to my ears sound very quick without being harsh except on bad recordings. According to the headroom frequency graphs, the highs on the DT770 are emphasized from 5khz up to 10khz, and even more so above 10 khz.

I'm wondering whether there is any word yet on the release and availability of the new, "flagship" model DT880's, has anyone heard anything?
Granted, I'm more than sure that Jan Meier would alert us when these things happens. I suppose I am just eager to see what comes of these cans, and to hear from those who order right away and their impressions. Of course, I would also like to Jan's impressions after he has had a true chance to audition them for himself.

I've put my name down with my supplier to be shipped one of each of the new models to play with as soon as they're available, no firm pricing or eta yet unfortunately

Well, at least one German retailer seems to be selling the new DT880, DT770, and DT990.

HiFinesse-Shop - Kopfhörer:

Personally, I can't help but wonder whether or not the DT880 will benefit from a 120 ohm headphone jack. I suspect not, but I've learned to be rather cautious about making assumptions!

Hopefully, some brave European correspondents will have further info before too long. :)

Kelly, I believe that's probably just a C&P of Beyer's own info on these cans... :-/

I don't know if this is old news, but Meier Audio has the 880's now - $225. Has anyone ordered them / heard them yet?

Perhaps Jan would share his impressions when/if he's heard them?

From meier-audio...

"The phone will be avaible by January 2003."

I'd wager Jan hasn't received the shipment yet, but is expecting it soon.

I've emailed Beyerdynamic the other day, and they confirmed availability for January. Personally, I'd exspect the DT880 to sound like a refined DT531, which is also more a semi-open than an open design. As I already like the DT531, it would be nice, if the DT880 added a little silkier highs, a bit more pronounced mid-range and some more punchyness to the already enjoyable DT531-sound...

Greetings from Munich!

Dear Vandit,

According to the distributor there are no sonic differences between the DT770PRO (old model) and the new DT770. The latter is just a little bit more comfortable and quite a lot more expensive. The new model can be ordered but I will not have it on stock.

Cheers,

Jan
