Samsung Galaxy S III & affordable tiny Stoner Acoustics UD100:

Like the ODAC, the heart of the Stoner Acoustics UD100 is the 24-bit ESS Sabre conversion chip.

Consider this. An android device (not even s3 or something), connecting it through an adb port and streaming those filles you have to have on your sd-card to any DACs or whaterver, and sending once again it's a dirty market program. Why cables, who cares?? Sorry, my personal selection emu0404. I had no trouble connecting my 0404, yes, no cables not known for me.

@danba  So can you control (reduce) volume at all through the S3?

Sep 23, 2012 at 2:20 PM Post #352 of 9,526
The UD100 is not mine.

As far as I understand, the adjustable output level feature of the ESS Sabre ES9023 chip is not implemented in the UD100 (and in the ODAC) unlike in the AudioQuest DragonFly.
The DragonFly allows Human Interface Device volume control from the player on the USB host (i.e. PC, Mac or Android device).

However without proper HID digital volume control, a player software can adjust the output level "by multiplying the each successive word in the original signal data stream by a coefficient that is less than one. For example, if the incoming signal is multiplied by a coefficient of 0.5, the output will be half of the original value. This corresponds with a volume reduction of 6 dB. In a binary system, a reduction of 6 dB is the same as shifting the signal towards the least significant bit by one bit", hence a theoretical loss of resolution.

Digital volume control:

Some people connect their UD100 directly to their headphones:

"yup, without amp.
i control the volume on winamp, although TS did mention there would be loss in quality but i seriously cant hear the difference.......still very good."

"sgs3 > UD100 > ath-ck100
volume level is sufficient, no amp required."
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=2452730&st=160&p=54596977&#entry54596977

"but im currently using the UD100 without DAC, surprisingly it churned out the dark side of my Superlux HD330.......i can only imagine what will happen if I amp it"
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=2452730&st=140&p=54532676&#entry54532676

ODAC directly connected to headphones:

"ODAC made all my Headamps Redundant !"
http://www.head-fi.org/t/621386/odac-made-all-my-headamps-redundant

"Well, I put sennheiser hd 800 directly on the ephifany edac.
I see the paradise.
Yes, in my s3 with neutron player I had to down the volune of 7-8 db, this, in teory, not very good, but I am very surprised about the super fantastic quality of sound out of my S3 with syhas kernel.
I am not crazy, please try this with high impedence headphone and share your experience."

You can't control it unless it recognises by the alsa driver.
Check up your .config and see what cards are supported, and what aren't. And if not, you have to add this module, as simple as that.

Galaxy Note running Paranoid Android 2.0 (Jellybean)> USB out cable> standard USB DAC >> amp >> headphones

Doesn't work with The Cambridge Audio Dacmagic Plus. Not sure though if that's because of the rom or that THe Dacmagic is incomaptible with android phones.

Is there any news on compatability with the asus xonar essence one? I am considering getting that dac for my computer and wonder if it would work with the phone

Heh, I have one for my desktop but not tried it!

I suspect it won't work, since it requires driver installation on the PC and is not plug and play. Will let you know later today.

Highly doubt it will work. wait... actually... if the STX works in linux, and the E1 works in linux, I'm sure it can work on android- mmmm

As expected, the Xonar Essence One is not working with the S3. It does actually output sound, which surprised me, but it's utterly garbled.
