Something must have changed.
 
When I had the X5III in Titanium and firmware 1.1.1 I could easily hear background hiss connected balanced with my SE846's between tracks & very slightly in track if trying to listen for it.
 
When my Red arrived yesterday I immediately updated it to 1.1.3 before using, and connected balanced I couldn't notice any hiss, even between tracks really.
 
I've spent last couple of hours listening to a range of soft classical/easy listening tracks which have quiet/silent phases in the tracks and I honestly can't hear any hiss in a totally silent room even between tracks and in a couple of tracks the instrument separation; clarity; placement; sound stage; air all sound noticeably improved compared to SE.
 
Anybody else noticed this on balanced?  Can't be down to Red being different surely (unless manufacturing/component variations can make a difference).
 
Its sounding simply stunning with my SE846's balanced, even better than I remember with Mojo due to wider sound stage than I remember with Mojo. The B&W P5's also sound great with it. 
 
 
Updated to 1.1.4 via download (not OTA) with no issues.  Also, not had loss of Spotify offline yet which I experienced before but that may have been down to Spotify with number of offline devices. Not sure on that yet. At the moment its working flawlessly with my Spotify Offline tracks on internal memory and my FLAC/DSD's on single 128GB Sandisk mSD in slot1.

The hardware keys play/pause, prev and next and also volume up/down only working if I set them on in the key-lock settings, custom lockscreen setting. If they are set to off, they have no function even in the normal screen. But I want to have the keys not working only in the lockscreen mode.
 
Have anybody else this behaviour?

I do not hear any hiss from the balanced or SE outputs using my U12. I do like the sound but I know decisively that the soundstage , instrument placing and layering could have been better. The DX 200 does that better, but the gen 3 does other things better and it cost less than half the price.
For a minute I was tempted to return my fiio and get the onkyo because for what I read the onkyo sounds like the dx200 for much less money.
I don't have the DX, a friend does.

Has anyone tried this with the Sennheiser Momentum by chance? I want this but I worry it might be too dark, since everyone is talking about synergy

I took my X5iii to a hardcore Japanese Audiophile shop. They were a Sony shop for 20 years then went solo 15 years ago?. Dad was Sony, son JBL another dude ONKYO. 2 other guys were audio engineers like the first 3 and actually co created a headphone in the vid I never heard of in my life.
 
The Sony ( I am a fanboy ...man...look at my sig...) The Sony is great. I had my X5iii with me and am more pleased than ever. I heard the Cayin again. I had the OPUS with the X5iii for a while. I had the DX200 with it for a while. I am happy with this. The price and sound quality kinda still blow my mind.

if my Grado sr60 arent dark ( actually i LOVE the SQ of that pair with X5iii!!!) i think Mometum wont be too - i have tested with Dunu 1k, ATH-MSR7 - non are dark rather IMO neutral with a bit of warm.

seems to be a "feature" have same situation if OFF then hardware buttons do not ork at all..

I updated to the new firmware without any problems, but the fiio music app is still crashing on me.

Speaking of coax out - my Fiio seems to 'compress' the stage and move it to the right when using coaxial (tried with 2 cables on 2 different amps).

e.g. [...x...y...z...] becomes [.......x.y.z.] are the voices of 3 singers.
 
Middle left , middle and middle right on analog become middle, 1/3 right and 2/3 right on coaxial.
 
Did anyone notice this?

I have Momentum 2.0. Works very well with X5iii.

I apologize for interrupting with this, but, I'm just curious if Beach Camera, who is the third-party selling via Amazon, is an approved, or at least reputable, Fiio re-seller?
 
I'm wondering if they actually have the red model in-stock and ready to ship, or if they are simply taking orders to ship later?  I only mention this because places like B&H Photo are still listing it for pre-order, with no arrival date listed.
I've messaged them via Amazon to see if they have them in-stock.
 
Also, one last thing...Where in the US would one be able to purchase the red leather case?  I have found it in a couple of places online, but, I'm not sure if they're based in the US.  Thank you!
