Grace Design x Massdrop m9XX DAC/Amp Review: First Impressions

  Thanks for the suggestion!

Although I am looking for a portable battery pack/power bank to replace the power adapter that comes with m9xx

Reason being, i'd like to use the unit on HP mode, and also do not want to leave it on all the time. So a battery pack with a On/Off button seemed perfect.

But if Grace has plans to add this feature (turn the unit off) via a firmware update, that would be best; as it would allow us to use the power adapter Grace recommends.

As long as it is getting power from the source device, unplugging from battery pack or power outlet will NOT turn it off.

I had to read the advertisement a couple of times myself. You can turn it off by unplugging the USB cable - this is for convenience, or so that if you forgot to power it off it will self-power off simply by unplugging from a phone once the phone is charged.

There is an on/off button.

I cant seem to figure it out. Where did you find that it can be turned off using a button?

I've had the m9XX since the first drop, before that an O2. I can't say i have any complaints. I have been told the m9XX is very impressive by people with more experience than I (more years, more toys). I'm interested to know if anyone is using the m9XX as a DAC for a Gustard H10 for more of a tube-like sound in a solid state package and for the increased AMP performance. I would be very interested in your impressions in comparing the AMP sections of these two products and any other insight I may be overlooking. I haven't spent too much time listening directly from the PC with anything other than the HD-595. I'm kinda spoiled by my equipment without having tried out too much lower tiered equipment for an extended time. I started with HD-595 and went stir crazy last year after realizing what I was missing starting with the X1. Primary headphones are TH-0XX and HE-400i but I also rotate thru the K7XX, X1, DT-770 80ohm and very occasionally the DT-990 600ohm. Is there anything to gain with the Gustard H10?

I don't know of that amp but definitely prefer my Little Dot I+ with upgraded opamp and tubes over the integrated amp inside my friend's m9xx. So while the DAC section blows me away, the amp section did not. However it could be because of my personal liking.

I was on the Gustard H10 bangwagon until the Burson V5s had some heat issues but they replaced me with a lycan amp that I requested instead.

m9xx with H10 stock op-amp 5532 sounds laid back to me. The Burson V5s op-amp are fantastic but alas keep on burning the original V5 opamps.

I noticed Burson have a newer version of V5 now that will withstand the heat of the Gustard H10. But i have since migrated to discrete amp now.

Anyone know if there will be a firmware update to m9xx that adds ability to turn it off or auto-turn off

Not likely, it is designed to remain on 24/7.  It does also come with a 5 year warranty so that should be an indication of the quality of the product.  I leave mine on all the time and have had no issues for the 3 months or so I have owned it.

I'm looking to upgrade my cheap Chinese DAC/amp.
At the moment I'm tossing up between this or a Schiit Magni 2 uber / Modi 2 uber combo.
Whichever I choose will be used as a desktop setup, listening to (mostly) FLAC files, on Fostex TH-X00's, and gaming with ATH-AD900X (these may be replaced with AKG K7XX's in the near future).
The Schiit stack would set me back a little over $500 aud. The Grace a touch over $700.
There is nowhere near me that sells headphone amps / DAC's, so I can't "try before I buy".
Is this m9XX worth the extra $200?
