  hi Brooko
thanks so much for your input. good points
Hmmm maybe a first for me the bone thing? I dont like it :D

In a sense I feel you are right, in fact I would agree with you 100% . . .except :)  I work on a daily basis closely with sound and the subtlties of audio so when Im hearing the qualities of bass [I hope] i would be hearing the various characteristics of the bass in and off itself from an understanding of audio and not be too influenced from other sources. (I hope!)
Im not saying this qualifies my opinions in anyway :) Anyway, a little knowledge is dangerous !  :/  So i do appreciate others' views

your ears Brook  are one of a handful that I do trust on this forum though so I will take your points on board and think more deeply about what you have said

Its funny, the more I hear audio, the more I think its almost impossible to say with any sense of definity that 'it' sounds like 'this' or 'it' sounds like 'that'! because there are SO many different changeable causes and conditions that come together with each listen. The synergys that combine between audio quality, device played on, headphone used...even mood! can make a huge difference

Having said that - I very much take on board your board your points - I like the red ulf plugs. I'll try going back to a more grey set up :) there are still some more tips  need to try

> I should point out, the cause of my slight dissatisfaction is NOT because these iem's are at fault but that they are SO good and so close to being [for me] an all round great headphone !
Oh, and to reiterate - listening to DSD Billie Holidays Verve recordings is like nothing I have ever heard :D

No problems and thanks for the kind words.  When I was running, it was really hard to find a good IEM because of the bone conduction.  Basically your ears seal, sound is magnified, and your head becomes an amplifier.  Classic example - go for a run, get the heart rate up, and then put your fingers in your ears to seal them.  Listen to your heart beat.  Unseal them - it disappears.  Neat huh?  Sealing your ears turns your head into an amp.

So when you're running or walking, the impact of your feet is magnified with a really good seal.  To counter this I switched to earbuds when I was running - although my U6 with MAMs would do an awesome job as well now. You can alleviate it a little with vented IEMs or with tips which may not quite seal as well.

Anyway - try the red ULF, then no filter at all for the LF, and whatever your preferred mid-range filter is.  No filter for the LF will give you a mid-bass boost as well.

And I agree with you on the FLC8s - pretty neat concept. I still need to work the mids out - they're the only thing I haven't managed to nail yet.  Problem is that to get it right - you need the right total combination.  And that is the one issue with so many options.

Huh, never thought of that, Thanks!!!

Sorry! everyone. A little busy these days, can not show up on here frequently.

Thanks for the suggestion to make the simple version of FLC8, we are considering the suggestion, we'll release it in the future, but maybe half a year later.

We are focus on developping the new flagship now, we may not call it FLC9, because it's much better than FLC8, and the price will much higher.

The sound of the new flagship was locked up months ago, I can say it's the best earphone I had ever heard, the sound is the ideal sound I had pursued for many years.

We'll reveal the picture in about two months after we apply for the patents

Sounds exciting! Look forward to hearing more from you regarding this.

This is very exciting news, as its always nice to see what someone is capable of when all constraints are removed.  I'm afraid the law of diminishing returns will put it beyond my range of interest.  I'm sure it will be a gem though.  I think the "simplified" FLC8S would be a great idea too.  A lot less too worry about when out and about with it, such as a mishap or getting it pilfered.  along with the full custom FLC8S, a lot of excitement is ahead.  I can see why you haven't had as much time for the forums, lol.

Could you guys coming from higher end Shure and Westone offer me some advice?

I bought Shure E3c when they came out in 2005 and have used them almost every day since then until recently.  I was never really a headphone enthusiast and never tried any "good" headphones other than these, but I loved them.  I bought them because I wanted good sound quality from my PMP (Rio Karma at the time, still the best I've ever had!), and they got a good review on anythingbutipod.com (lol).

Recently they cracked and it's time to replace them, and I decided to try something different, and have went through several pairs of non-IEMs and it's really shown me that IEMs are the right option for me.

I'd like another set of IEMs, ideally that would last me for 10 years like the Shures, but I would take 5.  I'd consider myself more of a music enthusiast than a super-critical audiophile.  Comfort and build quality are as important to me as sound.

For the past week or so I've been trying to determine if the SE846/W60 are "worth it" or if I should just go with SE535/W30/W40 and save a lot of money.

Then I see this!  And it's just thrown a wrench in the whole shebang.  To me it looks like BETTER than SE535/W30/W40 for less money, and POSSIBLY as good as SE846/W60 for WAY less money.

Is there any reason I should NOT get these?  Even if they have 50% as good of build quality of the SE846/W60, I can just replace them if they fail and still come out ahead.

These seem really compelling and I'm ready to cop them, but I REALLY don't like regret and buyer's remorse.  Is there anything I should know?

What else should I look at?  I'd like something in-between what joker would call "warm and smooth" and "balanced", and excellent comfort and build quality.

The only "against" reasons I can offer is:

  1. If you have low patience level and/or an aversion to microscopic parts. The filters are many & tiny. You can spend a lot of time coming up with the sound signature YOU prefer with the filter combinations. You can also spend a lot of time looking for that one tiny filter that fell out of your grasp onto the floor/carpet.

  1. If you aren't willing to spend a little extra on a better cable. The stock cable is pretty bad for microphonic transmissions from rubbing against clothing and such.

Otherwise, I suggest reading through this thread. I also was on the cusp of getting the Shure SE846 (I've owned E3C, SE535 & UE TF10 in the past as well) or another set of Westones. But I came across this thread and ended up purchasing these FLC's. I think they are fantastic for the price and agree these have the potential to rival $1000+ iems.
