You can't offer any explanation?  Then how does someone go about learning what the difference is?

Hear stuff that has similar characteristics and try to establish common meanings to words.

Unfortunately no. They are metaphors that don't necessarily correlate well to measurements. Maybe a 9kHz emphasis / bump on HE-1000? Maybe higher...

I'd concentrate on what the HE-1000 does well too.

If I had to choose, I would take a small peak around 9khz and up to one between 3khz and 6khz any day.
A peak that high usually just adds some sparkle and life to the sound, IF, its not too severe.
A peak between 3khz and 6khz can be very annoying, and can sound hot, sibilant, steely, and/or hard, and can be very fatiguing.
I am very sensitive to any peaks in the 3 to 6 k range, and hence I got rid of the HD600, HE-560, and HD800 for this very reason...
Do you think an extended burn-in might help any with the "splashy" treble?

I never had any problems with treble on T1, HE6 and K812. A sparkle treble with emphasis in 9khz like the Abyss have would be fine. I hope the HE1000 would make everything a little better then Abyss except of Bass. I cannot believe there would be a headphone with better Bass quality in near future. But time will tell.

Nope. Should be an easy tweak though. I fixed Abyss' "steely" timbre issue to a point where I loved the FR on it. Similar thing with HFM Jades. Don't listen to me. I'm nuts. The HE-1000 is a fantastic headphone. At least from what I heard at the Bay Area meet.

Oh god, I severely misheard if the treble is anywhere near T1/K812 levels. The only reason I, and many others, have issue calling those cans "reference" cans is that the treble is so much hotter than neutral.

Your explanation does not need to be measurement focused. Just difficult to relate to the words 'splashy' and 'etched' when there are a ton of corresponding sounds I can think of that fit those descriptions. Possible time periods within songs that demonstrate a 'splashy' vs 'eteched' treble presentation or another alternative headphone that may have a similar presentation or even a flowery description would all work.

Genuinely interested in hearing your thoughts. thank you.

edit: perhaps add 'steely' to that list too hahah. thanks!

If we have to mod the headphones, which will cost three thousand dollars, to make sound correct the headphone itself is not worth it from the start.

I really hope Dr. Fang adjusts the headphones again if treble is becoming an issue.

Oh, please Fang...don't make then sound like the LCD-3s...that's what we have the LCD-3s for.

The beta units have been burned in at factory, and also personally inspected by Dr. Fang.

With that said, he believes that the issues with treble may be fixed over time as the diaphragm settles. You may notice quite an evolution over the course of the burn-in period.

To that end, just put on the headphones and enjoy.

If we get to pick at the wish list of "diaphragm settlement" effects, I would choose more detail and articulation.

The good news are I do actually quite enjoy these!

I imagine like anything audio, or most anything, they need time to burn in. Like it or not it often happens and is being acknowledged by more and more companies. With both mechanical and electrical properties coming into play with these headphones, it is understandable they need time to mature.

Mine arrived. I'm comparing them to the Ethers primarily. The HE1000s are more "around your head" while the Ethers are more "in your head". The deep bass seems to really rumble and they are already picking up micro details which I hadn't noticed on some tracks. The treble is a tiny bit irritating, but I don't know if they need some use before this will change.

How is the bass vs the Ether?

A bit more towards the deep where the Ethers are bit more towards the mid-bass. The HE1000s are more like a good sub which fills the room, where the Ethers are more punch. I was listening to a track for the first time which has a thunderclap at the end and the Ethers made it feel as if it were coming from outside my apartment! They also make me think I'm feeling bass and I've left my speakers on. It's a weird illusion. The HE1000s are a bit more entertainingly tuned, ie: what I coined as "fun". If you've ever listened with 'stats and thought "I wouldn't mind a bit more bass" then you'll like the HE1000s.

Perhaps the fuzzor mod would help those highs.

Do link me! I've not kept up with the goings-on with the HE6s.

This is exciting news regarding the SR009.  You do get more outside of head "feeling" with tubes using SR009 as opposed to solid state.

It sounds like the 009s may be closer to the Ethers in presentation. I don't have a pair any more to compare though.

I have a hard time believing that HE-1000 is as bright as the rest of the HiFiMan lineup.

Not so much "bright" as the rest (not sure who said that), but rather different kind of bright. HE-1000 had a bit of "splashy" treble, but preferable compared to HE-560 (harsh / sibilant) and HE-6 (etched), at least to my tastes. Really just nitpicking. Expensive TOTL stuff should be nitpicked. YMMV. For FWIW, throw a smooth tube DAC like SFD in front of it, and everything should be fine.

I think that the treble peak in the HE1000s may be a db or two too strong. Mind you, My system is set up more for the darker Audezes at the moment -- Hugo, Silver Dragon, Studio Six with lively tubes.

My only nit-picking at the moment is that I wish the fit and finish was at 009 levels, but that would add $1k to the price I don't doubt.
