Rockbox for iBasso DX90 dual boot with Mango (Stock Firmware)

I made some rockbox firmware mods on my device to make the touchscreen much better and to disable it while the screen is turned off which may be done simply by hitting the side button once to toggle it on and off in the same way ipod/iphone works.  physical buttons are still enabled while screen is off and will not re-enable the screen for example when you skip tracks and change the volume.  Helps improve battery life and presents a very familiar experience to how ipod/iphone works.

This sounds like exactly what I want. Is it a patch I can flash, or would I have to compile RB myself?

Do you plan to post your changes to the source on Gerrit?

I think they put a few of the touchscreen fixes up but the ui changes for things like sleep screen i just kept myself since i don't think they would want those changes as they offer a completely different way of using the device.  If anyone wants the changes I made I'd be happy to share them just figured they aren't things rockbox would want for everyone maybe. I'd be curious to hear what others think of them.

Would be nice if there was a place on headfi you could upload firmware images for others to use.

Hello,

Long story short, I own a Fiio X3ii and I love its UI. It has a well thought out navigation and shortcuts. For example, one long press of a button from anywhere in the device takes the user back to the Now Playing screen, and pressing the Back button on the Now Playing screen takes the user back to the folder from which the track is being played. These 2 navigations and shortcuts are my favorite and I have become very much accustomed to it.

That said, Fiio's scroll wheel is its weakest link, leading to possible malfunctions in a few months is what I have gathered (not all devices but there definitely is a risk). Because of the reliability issues in the Fiio player, I started looking for option outside Fiio and DX90 caught my eye. 2 major complaints I have heard about the DX90 are the battery life and the UI. Battery life is not a deal breaker for me and based on what I have read here, Rockbox really takes DX90 to another level with respect to UI.

I do not have have the option to try the device nor am I able to find any video demos of the rockboxed DX90 nor any demo of the stock Mango OS. And so my only option is to ask about how it works with regards to my 2 favorite navigations:

1. Is it easy to get back to the Now Playing screen no matter where I am in the device?

2. Is there a back button in the Now Playing screen that would take me back to the folder from which the track is being played?

One click would be the best, but I can manage with 2 or 3 clicks as long as it is easy and quick.

Thanks for your help. Please let me know if any part of my question needs clarification.

If u had a small cheap sansa clip+/zip u could install rockbox and see for yerself. I have however grabbed my fuzeV2 which is rockboxed and shall attempt to answer yer questions;

1. I don't think so, at least not on my fuze v2. Rockbox is highly customisable so perhaps there is a way.

2. Yes, pressing the home button during the NPS takes you to the current Playlist yer working from, or Album/Folder depending on what you selected.

Bare in mind this was done in the Fuzev2 and not a ibasso.

PS the ibassoDX90 is apparently much better SQ wise than the X3 as well as having a removable battery thereby allowing a much longer battery life should you invest in more batteries (I think it takes the same as the Galaxy S4 smartphone).

1. Yes — tapping the "home" button that appears in the upper right corner of the DX90's UI will always return you to the Now Playing screen.

2. Yes, usually — When playing a song from an album, you can typically tap "My Music" in the lower left corner of the UI and be directed to a list of the songs from the album you're playing. The only way this gets funky is if you were already paging through your library and then go back to the "home/Now Playing" page. Then if you tapped "My Music", it would take you back to the last spot that you had been browsing. But it's easy to select albums and artists in any case.

Thank you. I really appreciate that. That gives a clear picture and was really helpful. I guess I am sold. Should be placing my order soon.

I'm still having an issue where Mango shows my album art but rockbox doesn't. I have a small number of MP3 files but most of my library is ALAC and managed via iTunes.

I'm guessing I will need to use a 3rd party program of some sort to fix this since iTunes only seems to attach the album art in its own proprietary manner. Any suggestions for what I can use for the quickest solution? I'd prefer not to spend days/weeks fixing it.

I also want to add that while browsing the web I see multiple sites state that if I use iTunes and do a "Get Info" on a track I can manually upload the artwork that way and it will work. That is actually what I have been doing all along. Its just odd that all the album art shows up fine in mango but not rockbox.

Hi all

I realise the above post was some time ago but I have recently encountered the opposite problem. I have Napcha's dual boot build for Rockbox with Lurker's modified Mango firmware for version 2.3 loaded on my DX90. I have so far loaded quite a lot of FLAC albums ripped from dbpoweramp software onto the 128gb micro sd card in my DX90. Had no problems whatsoever in Mango with album art showing on any albums.......until recently. Bizarrely on just one album, "Radio Musicola" by Nik Kershaw, despite the fact that the usual procedure was followed when ripping, the album art showed when ripping, it shows as a jpg on my computer and showed as being embedded in each track according to dbpoweramp , when I play that album in Mango there is no artwork showing. But when I flip to Rockbox it shows. Does anyone know why this might be please?

Thanks

Thanks Lurker. What do you mean though by interlaced? As I said, I have done nothing different to the many other cds that I have ripped and they all show the album art in Mango. What is the difference with this one?

When you save a jpeg in a picture editor, there is an option for interlaced format. Just don't use it. If you get covers from elsewhere, open it in a editor, try to "save as..." and look through available compressing options. I can't say more, because details depend on the particular editor.

Most of album art at discogs.com are interlaced, by the way!

In an old version of Adobe Photoshop (I'm running it right now) it is called "Progressive" and has "Number of scans" corresponding value. "Baseline" is the format that Mango accepts.
