X1 is a basshed can. The Oppo Submitted by Tyll Hertsens on September 26, 2014 - 1:32pm

X1 is a basshed can. The Oppo isn't. No comparison really. I've got the X2 in the house, and will be reviewing it soon.

I'm both disappointed (I was hoping to hear it'd be a big improvement) and relieved (I don't feel bad about getting a cheap pair of X1's).

I suggested earlier that it be called the Philips Fidelio X1 "Here's Your Stupid Removable Ear Pads You Whinny Headphone Nerds" Stealth Edition.

In fairness, having removable pads is kind of a basic thing unless you really believe your stupid little pieces of fabric will last forever. Otherwise it's like making a car with wheels that can't come off.

If I'd constructed an X2 with a "big improvement" over already heavily underpriced (given the wonderful EQ-able audio aswell as the build quality of the X1 in comparison to the competition) cans, I wouldn't sell them at the same price ...

Sure you would. It's not like every new model of everything costs more than the older model. If that was the case, every single computer and car would cost somewhere in the millions.

A device's value depreciates over time, so by the time the new model rolls around, the same cost is expected to result in more received. The very first iPhone cost $600.

The X1 pads are (well documented in various corners of the w3) easy to remove/replace, but I doubt I have to change them in the coming 5-7 years...compared with the US Pro 900 pads (still have the 1st set mounted - after min. 4 hrs daily use in 4 years), the X1 pads seem to me MUCH sturdier. AFAIK Philips EU delivers spare pads - normally you have to send your can in for an replacement, but you should get a pair on order sent to your door.. ymmv...

Why would they have a discontinued model there?

To compare them to the new version seems logic to me,that you wanna let people hear the difference/upgrade.....but since they haven't i know there is no difference soundwise just like some guys just stated......they just took the minor things and upgraded them so they should be called X1U(pgraded)

I don't think I ever seen any producer bring discontinued stuff to any kind of show. Kind of beats the whole purpose of being there which is usually to promote your new stuff.

I totally agree that it's a shame that the X2 doesn't seem to be an update sound wise though.

I hope they also hardened the jack for the wire in the cup, I read it often breaks

No one does that for any piece of technology anywhere ever. Go to CES, you won't find a single discontinued model of anything.

I think it would be difficult to make the X2 less v-shaped than the X1 and with tighter bass. The L2 already fills that role. For the sake of product differentiation it sort of makes sense.

Sep 27, 2014 at 6:14 PM Post #419 of 15,268
It's weird because usually the "portable" cans like the L2 have more bass, because noise on-the-go in metro and city is of low frequency and more bass help overcoming it and avoids using high volumes to perceive the sound, and a "home" use pair of cans would have made more sense being flat and analytical. Yet Philips made the opposite, the L2 ore balanced and the X1 bassy

Pleas clarify this for me.

I have been in contact with both Philips in UK and Sweden about spare pads for the Philips X1 and L2 and they simple do not exists, only spare part thay could get was the cable. Philips did send me to 2 diffrent service companies in Europe and both stated the same(only cable for spare). Note that this was no simple answer over the phone/chat, they hade to make contact within the company(Philips) to check this, the even checked a storage facility in Holland. I have also tried to contact the Philips Design department about this and how this works with a environment thinking, still no answer.

Philips recommendation after all this was to go to the reseller and ask them!? really? What could thay do that Philips itself could not!?

But yes, the current one should last a couple of years. I have hade a pair of Philips HP890 with similar pads for about 12 years now, they have however only been for every day use the last 3 years. They is still not teared but they are worn. The pads are removal as far as I can see but I do not know if there ever was any replacements. However, these headphones was about $50 so no big deal more then on the environment.

What if a dog tears one of the pads? Or any other accedent happens? Buy a new pear of headphones for $260.

Now, the X2 pads may fit the X1 even if the Philips support states that they will not. So maybe there is a solution for the X1 but L2?

So, there is 2 main resons I do not buy a Philips headphone :

1. Clearly no thinking of the environment
2. Clearly no thinking of the customer (non-replaceable pads is like non-replacable tires or non-replacable battery, its simple a consumption part), non replaceable pads on headphones in the $2600 level!?
