I own a DX90 and I just upgraded to firmware 2.1.0 International (thank you, lurker0!).  My only pair of IEMs currently are U-shaped JVC HA-FXT90s.  I'm looking to pick up a second pair of IEMs—this time geared more toward neutrality and accuracy.  I have $120 on them but I might be able to push it as high as $150 for an ideal set.  I'm not a basshead, exactly, but I cannot stand IEMs with emaciated bass response that leaves my music feeling hollow.  I listen to a lot of metal, which really loses something without punchy double-bass kicks.

Before I bought my DX90 I briefly owned a pair of HiFiMan RE-400 Waterlines, which I never got to hear fully burned in.  Back then, I listened to them on my iPod Classic with a FiiO e11 amplifier.  While I delighted in their clarity I was disappointed by their lower end, which was utterly dependent upon the e11's bass boost.  Despite having serious concerns about their reliability—as many users on Amazon have reported cable damage or driver failures even with little and careful use—I would absolutely consider picking them up again if I were advised to.

Another pair I am considering now is the Etymotic Research HF5, which I have never heard before.  After reading reviews all over Head-Fi, both of these IEMs appear to offer stunning accuracy and detail with occasional complaints about their bass response.  The HF5s seem not to have the RE-400s' build issues but ljokerl's IEM comparison reviews favor the Waterlines slightly regarding both sound quality and overall value.

I'd love to get your thoughts here as to which I might prefer, but I'll seriously consider any other suggestions as well.  If you post a response to me about these or any other IEMs, please comment specifically on how well they complement the DX90.  Thanks in advance for your thoughts, and for having read all of this.

I've just entered the DX90 + IE800 club as well and it sounds freakin' awesome.  Just wondering, what gain/volume setting are you guys using?

Great looking case. From what I have read, that is a great combo but then you are listening to it and know!

wow nice. Congratulations. I have the ibasso dx90 aswell. Am looking also into the sennheiser ie800. I go to use it when i go to the gym and jogging. But am afraid of the microphonic cables. Does it make noise if the cables are bouncing on my sweather?

Absolutely avoid IE800 if you are going to be active while using it, the microphonics is pretty terrible.

I love my IE800's but for me, they're strictly for stationary listening due to the cable microphonics.  Also, I don't find the isolation to be good enough to use in noisy places.

From Amazon in US: http://www.amazon.com/Dignis-Leather-Case-iBasso-DX90/dp/B00K264RJM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1407730331&sr=8-2&keywords=ibasso+dx90+case

Ain't cheap, but not like DX50/DX90 users have much of a choice when looking for a case higher quality than that of the included silicone case.  I haven't been able to find this case in Asia as well, weird - so I had a friend ship it to me from the States.

I'm gonna sound biased, but I don't think the IEM's you've listed are in the same league as IE800's.

When I first opened/closed the cover, it wasn't flushed. The left side had a small gap, I tried opening/closing again with no success. I'm using the rubber cover so it doesn't really bother me much, normally I'm very OCD about things. This gives me more reason to order that leather case. :)

The funny thing about the leather case is that before buying it, it was pretty tough to find good pictures of it on the DX(even this thread only had a couple).  So, since it looks like the case got a good reaction, here are some more pictures to help potential buyers make the decision.

Needless to say, I love it!  So much better than the silicone case that I've been using with DX50.
