i have had it for 24 hours now and my first impressions on the DX90 are more than good (i upgraded from a Cowon J3, which will probably be sold as i don't see it getting any more playback time from now on)

Looks / Build : this thing is slim and PRETTY and much smaller than i thought , judging from the pics here

Sound : I really like what i am hearing so far - installed Lurker 2.1.0 and amped with my arrow 4G, my RE-272 sound very, very nice

UI : very easy to use , it has lots of cool features and very easy to get around to (the DX50 manual was very helpful)

I really like how you can choose to plug it with the usb cable and keep charging while listening , very helpful for this quickly draing battery

I have replaced the stock battery with a Samsung Korea/China battery and the sound is really nice/full/lush

i also found great value for money the samsung 64gb EVO sdcard with the sd adaptor (really helpful when i want to transfer music files from my pc without using the dx90) - and at 1/3 of the 128gb sandisc sdcard price

I am 100% happy with my purchase , this is a very enjoyable DAP - it was a great investment (music is my drug so every $ spent feels more than well spent)

thanx to all the people here for the feedback/impression/help here

cheers

Thank you jj69 and DrSheep for advice on DAPs. In addition to the IBasso products, the Sony A15/16/17 is an option, but unfortunately, the Clip+ and FiiO X1 are not because I need 128GB of memory and want a digital output too.

I was getting an itch to buy some new audio gear, I nearly bought a HM901, but after talking to Jamato, he assured me that DX90 + 2.15L2 is on the same playing field, soooooo I bought an NAD M51 Dac for my stereo system instead

I had a ZX1 a while ago and decided to keep the DX90 using firmware 2.05 at the time, with the latest firmware, It could be a flat out win for the DX90 imo. ZX1 did have its highlights though, I'll give a small rundown of the sound highlights:

ZX1 Pros: Huge sound stage, airy presentation, extremely tight bass, extremely fast/tight sound, euphoric and energetic quality to sound.
ZX1 Cons: Weak weak amp section, might be a bit thin or digital sounding to some, kinda bright sound sig.

DX90 Pros: Powerful amp section, natural presentation and timbre, overall neutral and balanced, yet there is a hint of warmth (a good thing), great imaging, hard hitting "full" sound, bass has good body and impact.
Cons: Hmmm, that's a tough one! It is totally possible one prefers the thin and fast sound of the ZX1 over the DX90, but I would wager that most people would prefer the natural and full body sound of the DX90.

Obviously the ZX1 had better UI mainly due to a larger screen, and better extra features, but in terms of actual UI speed the DX90 is in fact just as fast, once you get used to using the smaller screen you will be flying through menus. I honestly don't have any gripes about the DX90 usability coming from a ZX1, its really that good for me.

Glad you like it :)

Do you really feel the need of an external amp? I'm sure the DX90 can drive your RE272 just fine with the HO. I just love the fact that I don't need to carry around so much stuff for great sound.

i am just trying all the possible combinations , as this is day 2 of my new toy

the internal amp is fine and when i go outside i will probably just take the dx90 (although i found a silicone arm band and it keeps the arrow and the dx together like a couple in love

)

i have yet to try the L.2.1.5 and the RE-600

with or without amp , so plenty of combinations when i decide which one is best i will get back here i guess

A couple people I spoke to said the DX90+ 2.1.5L2  is on the same level as the brick daps like HM901/DX100, I've personally compared the DX90 to AK240, and my conclusion was I'll keep my DX90. Obviously all these daps sound different, so everyone will have their own preference as to which is best. But on a quality level the DX90 is playing ball with the big boys. I would save your money, and if you have an audio itch, maybe spend it on something other than a Dap as you already have one of the very best, but if you just want another dap with a different sound sig, then by all means get another dap, just don't expect a big sound quality jump, unless you really prefer the sound sig of the new dap, in which case it would be worth it for you.

I know its personal preference but I think the dx90 sounds better without the arrow in the chain. It's definitely more spacious and livelier without the arrow

It is fun to have different daps to turn to, to use and integrate into your listening experience. The 901 is a very mature sounding dap. Full bodied, yet with detail. To me, you have to forget the price of the DX90. If it was say, 1000 dollars, the sound and UI to me, would still be worth it and also it wouldn't be, can it play with the more expensive daps, it would be one. At that point it would be a matter of preference to sound, like venues for jazz, rock or a classical music performance. The only difference between the more expensive daps and the DX90 is price and in my view, the consumer wins.

I really like the latest FW and the Lurker0 modification works out to be the icing on the cake or on the dap. :^)

Interesting. On some classical I prefer not to use gapless. The slight pause between a number of concertos I am listening to is preferable to gapless and more natural. On most rock, jazz and other music the gapless works great.

It controls aspects of the dac and will produce slightly different sound. Most but by far not everybody seem to prefer slow most of the time but it is up to you to decide which you prefer

i see - so there isn't any consensus on what the sound changes are, or how it affects it. cool.

thanx for helping out nc8000, i have noticed how you take time to help many people here
