Was never impressed with the SPL.
The K812 do strikingly better with a capable tube/hybrid amp IMHO.
Also, I preferred the Lehmann BCL to the SPL for a SS amp with the AKGs.

I agree iro tube amps for the 812: I tend to end up using it with the Woo Audio WA2. :)

my old audiogd nfb10.32 controls the 812 pretty well.

amps don't control cans - cans draw power from them. maximum input power rating for the k812 is 300mw and at 110 db spl/v it's a very efficient can according to akg's specs. not surprising then that this can is easy to drive and should pair well with daps and portable head amps.

K812 sounds more full bodied n "normal" off my ipad n straight off the McAir too.  whew.
( i had little luck with my tube amps on the first session...my pet songs were anemic /brash..
need to swap out some tubes ..do some tuning :p )

The K701 and K501, although rated at 62 and 120 ohms, respectively, posed very difficult loads necessitating higher gain and more current.  Amplifier matching could be very difficult.

Not sure whether EXACTLY the same thing goes for the K812, but I am using the Fitz-improved Bada PH-12 hybrid to good effect, an amp that drove the K701 well.  In addition, the SS Lehmann BCL works well, too, with the gain setting at zero.
